INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team clinched a top two seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with its 3-1 win at Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons improve to 19-5, 10-1 GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 12-13, 5-6 GLVC.
With the win, UMSL is guaranteed to finish either first or second in the GLVC. The GLVC Tournament will be held Nov. 10-12 at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
The Tritons jumped out to a 6-3 lead to begin the contest but UIndy ran off nine in a row to grab a 12-6 lead after three straight kills from Grace Hegwood. UMSL evened the set at 14 thanks to an 8-2 run of its own.
Trysta Foster had three straight aces while
Lexie Rang and
Mya Elliott had a pair of kills apiece in the run.
The Greyhounds regained the lead with a 4-0 run and were still ahead 20-17 when the Tritons went on their final run scoring eight of the final nine points to take the opening set 25-21.
Hannah Copeland had two kills in the run while
Charlotte Richards had a kill and an ace. Copeland and
Hailey Flowers teamed up for a pair of blocks.
The second frame was similar to the first as UIndy jumped out to a 12-6 lead but once again UMSL rallied thanks to a 12-4 run of its own to grab an 18-16 lead after a kill from Richards. The Tritons extended their lead to 21-17 after an error by Sophia Parlanti. The Hounds wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the stanza as UMSL scored four of the final six points to take the set 25-19.
UIndy refused to go quietly as it dominated the third frame. The Hounds again built a six-point lead midway through but unlike the first two sets were able to close it out winning 25-18 to extend the match to a fourth set. UIndy hit .342 in the frame to just .194 for the Tritons.
The final set went back-and-forth with six ties and three lead changes over the first 20 points. UMSL trailed 9-7 before seizing control with an 8-2 run to build a 15-11 lead after Elliott and Rang stuffed Emma Jones. The Greyhounds fought back to within 18-17 after Jones and Hannah Huppenbauer blocked Copeland.
However, that would be the closest UIndy got as the Tritons scored seven of the last eight points to win the set 25-18.
UMSL hit .333 in the contest with 59 kills against 11 errors in 144 swings. Rang led three Tritons in double figures with 15 kills while Elliott added 14 and Richards finished with 11.
