ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team saw its 2022 season come to a close on Friday evening as it was defeated by Illinois Springfield 2-1 in the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill.
The Tritons dominated play in the first half outshooting the Prairie Stars (10-6-3) 5-1 and took the lead nearly midway through the stanza. UMSL won a corner kick and as the ball was served into the penalty box a foul was called on UIS' goalkeeper, Allison Mirimanian, as she pushed
Jalyn Richardson resulting in a penalty kick.
Maya Ware converted the kick beating Mirimanian to the lower right corner for her fourth goal of the season.
UMSL had a chance to add to its lead in the 34th minute but
Ayana Weissenfluh's shot from outside the box was saved by Mirimanian.
The Prairie Stars scored twice in a span of 1:49 late in the second half to take the lead. Dani Auble scored the equalizer in the 77th minute as Madison Grandys played a ball from the midfield ahead to Auble. Auble got behind the defense, ran it down and chipped it over
Paige Schwartz for her first goal of the season.
UIS scored what proved to be the game-winner with 11:31 remaining. Corinne Stewart crossed the ball across the field to Ally Lassetter and Lassetter's shot from 18 yards out hit the underneath portion of the crossbar and went in for her fifth goal of the season.
The Tritons had three chances at the equalizer in the span of 0:34 seconds shortly after the Prairie Stars took the lead. Richardson's shot from just inside the left corner off the box that was deflected out for a corner. Ware's service found
Cammie Robinson in the middle of the box who headed it towards the lower left corner. Mirimanian made the initial save but couldn't control the rebound as it fell to
Casey Clark but she was unable to score the equalizer as Mirimanian made another save.
UMSL outshot the Prairie Stars 10-9 including 6-5 in shots on goal in the contest and had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Weissenfluh led the Tritons with three shots in the contest and put two on goal. Schwartz made three saves in the contest.
UMSL finishes its season with a record of 6-7-5 overall and was 3-4-5 in GLVC play.
