Tritons Earn Two Major Awards, Five All-GLVC Nods

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team had five players earn All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors and also collected two of the four major awards, it was announced by the league office Wednesday night. The annual awards were presented at a banquet on the eve of the GLVC Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Graduate student Charlotte Richards was named the GLVC's Player of the Year for the third straight year and is the first player in league history to ever win the honor three times, while head coach Ryan Young was selected by his peers as the GLVC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.

Richards, a unanimous first-team selection, was one of three Triton players to earn First Team All-GLVC accolades. Senior outside hitter Lexie Rang and freshman setter Caitlin Bishop joined Richards on the first team, while junior libero Kylie Adams and senior outside hitter Hailey Flowers landed on the second team.

Young earns his second GLVC Coach of the Year acclaim in the last four seasons. The 12th-year headman guided the Tritons to a 20-5 record including 11-1 in the GLVC and a share of the GLVC Regular Season championship. UMSL earned the two seed in this weekend's GLVC Tournament which matches its highest seed since he took over. The Tritons are riding a six-match winning streak, are receiving votes in this week's AVCA national poll and are ranked second regionally.

Richards won three GLVC Player of the Week awards this season with two offensive (Sept. 12 and Oct. 10) and one defensive (Nov.7 ). The outside hitter was selected as one of three unanimous choices on the All-GLVC First Team thanks to a league-leading 174 kills in 42 sets against GLVC foes and had the most kills per set (4.14) and was tied for fifth in aces per set with 0.40. Overall, in 89 sets played she led the league in kills per set (4.11), kills (366), points (422.5) and points per game (4.75). Richards recorded the second-most service aces overall (42; 0.47 per set) and registered 14 double-doubles this season.

Bishop leads the GLVC and ranks 12th in NCAA DII with 11.04 assists per set. She's also added 1.73 digs per set and has 32 service aces. Bishop has guided an offense that ranks first in the conference in hitting percentage at .267, assists with 13.26 per set and is second in kills at 14.12 per set.

Rang ranks sixth in the conference in kills per set with 3.44, fourth in points per set (4.12), is eighth in total kills at 306, eighth in aces per set at 0.37, ninth in aces with 33 and 19th in digs at 3.22 per set.

Adams is sixth in the GLVC in digs per set with 4.56 and ninth in total digs at 406. She earned her first GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Oct. 3.

Flowers is fifth in the conference with a hitting percentage of .308 and is averaging 2.32 kills per set. She was named the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3.

Junior Karli Dean was also named UMSL's recipient of the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. Each of the 13 conference schools chose one student-athlete who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside the sports-competition setting. Dean is now eligible to become one of UMSL's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.

The Tritons take on No. 7 seed Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the third of four quarterfinal round matches at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
