ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team dropped its final game of the 2022 calendar year to Parkside 91-65 on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons drop to 3-7 while the Rangers improve to 7-6.
The first quarter was a game of runs as there were three ties and eight lead changes. UMSL led for over half the quarter and was ahead by as many as four at 14-10 with 5:02 left in the stanza after a jumper from
Shania Liburd.
The Tritons shot 60 percent in the first 10 minutes making 9-of-15 field goal attempts while Parkside shot 54 percent (7-for-13).
UMSL scored the first four points of the second period to build its largest lead of the game at 25-19 after back-to-back baskets from
Amaya Blake and
Shae Dillavou.
The Rangers went on a 13-2 run over the next 3:40 to regain the lead at 32-27 on a jumper in the paint from Paty Gallasova.
Morgan Ramthun stopped the run momentarily as she scored off a put back of a missed jumper from
Jalysa Stokes to make it 32-29.
That would be the closest the Tritons got the rest of the way as Parkside closed the half on an 11-5 run to take a 43-34 lead into halftime.
The Rangers came out firing to begin the third quarter hitting their first five attempts from three and outscored UMSL 17-8 to extend their lead to 18 points just past the midway point of the quarter. Parkside shot 64 percent in the stanza including 7-of-9 from three to extend its lead to 23 by the end of the frame.
The Tritons struggled to shoot the ball in the final stanza making only 3-of-13 shots but did go 8-for-8 at the foul line but the Rangers shot 82 percent in the quarter to put the game away.
UMSL finished the game shooting 41 percent (23-of-56) from the field, was 3-of-14 from three but did shoot 94 percent at the foul line. Stokes led the Tritons with 17 points while Ramthun added 13 and Blake chipped in with nine.
Parkside shot 67 percent (33-for-49) in the contest including 13-of-23 from downtown and shot 92 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded UMSL 28-to-21 in the contest. Alyssa Nelson led all scorers with 21 points. She was joined in double figures by Courtney Schoenbeck with 15 points, Kayla Bohr added 14 points and Grace Lomen and Sheridan Flauger had 13 points each.
UMSL resumes Great Lakes Valley Conference play next Thursday (Jan. 5) as they travel to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m.
