ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Missouri - St. Louis Tritons baseball team opened up conference play today against William Jewell College. Both teams' offenses came ready to play as there were 19 hits and 16 runs between the two teams. The Tritons out-hit the Cardinals 11-8 but ultimately fell by the score of 11-5. Four Tritons recorded a multi-hit game, and leading the way was Senior Matt DiMemmo recording three hits.
The Cardinals (14-4, 1-0 GLVC) got on the board first via an RBI groundout in the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, the Cardinals scored on a sac fly, then again on a base hit up the middle, extending their lead to 3-0.
The Tritons (1-12, 0-1 GLVC) responded in the bottom of the second, when Carson Holin scored on a base hit by Brandon Pasley, making it a 3-1 ball game.
The Cardinals offense erupted in the top of the fourth inning, scoring six more runs with assistance from two home runs. The first three runners of the inning reached via the walk, and the Cardinals took advantage, plating all three of those runs with a grand slam. The next two runs were plated by a homerun to right field, making the score 9-1.
The Tritons answered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Back to back RBI sacrifice flies from Mitch Green and Carson Holin cut the Cardinals' lead to 9-3. Then Logan Mantz came to the plate and hit a two-run homerun to right-center, bringing the score to 9-5.
The Cardinals plated two more runs in the eighth inning off of Triton errors. Two throwing errors led to runners scoring from third base on back to back plays, extending the Cardinals lead to 11-5.
In relief for the Tritons, Trent Anderson threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out six Cardinals and scattering five hits.
The Tritons return to play tomorrow, facing William Jewell in a doubleheader starting at noon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
