Tritons Fall To Hawks In Four Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team fell in four sets to Quincy on Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons drop to 8-4, 1-1 GLVC while the Hawks improve to 12-0, 2-0 GLVC.

UMSL led 15-9 in the opening set but were unable to close it out as Quincy outscored them 16-8 the remainder of the frame to take it 25-23. The Tritons hit .222 in the stanza while the Hawks hit .279.

The second set was all UMSL as it scored the first eight points of the frame and never let Quincy get closer than five as it went onto win 25-12. The Tritons had 15 kills in the stanza and hit .371 while holding the Hawks to a zero hitting percentage.

UMSL was the first to 15 in the swing set but just like the opening stanza were unable to overcome a lengthy Quincy run as it closed the set scoring 13 of the final 15 points. The Tritons hit .262 in the frame but couldn't slow down the Hawks who hit .350 in the set.

UMSL led by four early in the fourth frame but Quincy rallied to take a 21-18 lead after Alice Pavan and Makayla Knoblauch blocked Charlotte Richards. The Tritons scored three of the next four points to climb back within 22-21 after a kill from Richards. That would be the closest they got though as the Hawks scored the final three points to win the set 25-21.

UMSL outhit Quincy .276 to .217 but the Hawks had 59 kills to 54 from the Tritons. The difference was from the service line as UMSL committed 11 service errors to just one for Quincy.

Richards led three Tritons in double figures with 16 kills while Maya Elliott added 11 and Hailey Flowers finished with 10. Caitlin Bishop handed out 44 assists and Kylie Adams finished with 17 digs.

Emma Wijnbergen finished with a match-high 21 kills. She was joined in double figures by Emily Rehagen with 16 kills and Mattison Norris added 15 kills. Knoblauch had 43 assists and America Galvan had a match-high 23 digs.

UMSL returns home next Friday (Sept. 23) to host Truman State at 6 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
