ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis's volleyball team picked up its second straight win defeating William Jewell in four sets on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 10-4, 3-1 GLVC while the Cardinals drop to 7-10, 0-4 GLVC.
William Jewell lead 13-11 in the first set but UMSL countered with an 8-1 run getting three kills from
Lexie Rang and one from
Charlotte Richards to take a 19-14 lead. The Tritons still led 24-21 and had three set points but the Cardinals scored three in a row to extend the set. UMSL eventually won the set 26-24 on back-to-back kills from Rang.
WJC led by as many as four points in the second frame but the Tritons battled back to even things at 21 on a kill from Rang. The Cardinals scored the next three points on attack errors by Rang to take a 24-21 advantage. UMSL staved off one set one point as
Mya Elliott knocked down a kill but were unable to get any closer as Bella LaPorta got a kill on the next swing to give William Jewell the 25-22 victory and evened the match at a set apiece.
The Tritons went on a 20-4 run early in the swing set to break a 4-4 tie. The Cardinals scored four straight points to close the gap to 12 but were unable to get any closer as Richards knocked down a kill to give UMSL the 25-12 win. The Tritons hit .250 in the stanza and were led by Rang and Richards who combined for nine kills in the frame.
The final set was all UMSL as it scored the first five points of the set and never looked back as it led by as many as 15 points on its way to the 25-10 victory. The Tritons hit .406 in the final stanza and had 15 kills. Richards had seven of those kills while Elliott added three and Rang and
Hannah Copeland had two each.
UMSL finished the match hitting .279 with 60 kills against 17 errors in 154 chances. Richards led four Tritons in double figures with a match-high 18 kills while Rang added 16 and Copeland and Elliott had 11 each.
Caitlin Bishop had 44 assists and
Kylie Adams had a match-high 17 digs and three aces.
William Jewell was held to a .143 attack percentage registering 45 kills against 23 errors in 154 swings. Tatum Ernt led three Cardinals in double figures with 11 kills while LaPorta and Alex Dvorak added 10 kills each. Samantha Thompson handed out 24 assists and Haidan Baade finished with 16 digs. Dvorak also had six total blocks.
UMSL is back on the road next weekend as it travels to Kansas City for a matchup against Rockhurst next Friday (Sept. 30) at 6 p.m. at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.
