Volleyball Picks Up Pair Of Sweeps On Saturday At UIndy Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball picked up a pair of sweeps on Saturday afternoon at the UIndy Invitational in Indianapolis. The Tritons improve to 6-2 on the season.

The Tritons never trailed in the opening set as they scored the first three points of the match and led by as many as seven in the frame. The Eagles (3-5) made a late run cutting the deficit to 22-20 but UMSL was able to close it out scoring three of the final five points to take the opener 25-22.

The Tritons got off to another quick start in the middle stanza scoring six of the first seven points. The lead grew to 16-10 after a block from Lexie Rang. Ashland countered with a 10-4 run to even the set at 20 on a kill from Erin Krupar.

UMSL responded scoring four straight points to get to set point but the Eagles wouldn't go quietly scoring back-to-back points to get within 24-22. Charlotte Richards gave the Tritons the set win with her 13th kill of the match.

Ashland scored the first point of the final frame for its first lead of the match. UMSL came right back scoring six of the next seven points to grab a four-point lead. The lead grew to as many as seven at 15-8 after a kill from Richards. The Eagles battled back to within 17-12 but wouldn't get any closers as the Tritons closed out the match scoring eight of the final 13 points to complete the sweep 25-17.

UMSL hit .187 in the contest with 45 kills against 19 errors in 139 chances. Richards had a match-high 16 kills while Hannah Copeland added 10. Caitlin Bishop dished out 38 assists and Rang led the team with 18 digs.

Ashland hit .138 for the match with 34 kills against 17 errors in 123 swings. Krupar led the Eagles with 10 kills. Zoey Peck had 29 assists and Katie Thompson had a match-high 21 digs.

The Tritons used a 15-4 run midway through the opening stanza to extend its lead from 10-8 to 25-12. UMSL hit .400 in the frame with 20 kills against two errors in 45 chances and held Ohio Dominican (3-6) to a .105 hitting percentage.

The Tritons led 17-14 in the middle frame when they seized control as Rylee Edson served straight points to extend the lead to 24-14. The Panthers stopped the run momentarily before UMSL closed it out on a kill from Karli Dean to win 25-15.

The final stanza was the tightest of the match and was tied at 19 when the Tritons seized control scoring three straight points. ODU cut the deficit to 22-20 but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL scored the final three points of the match to win 25-20 and complete the sweep.

The Tritons hit .365 in the contest with 52 kills against 10 errors in 115 chances. Richards led UMSL with a season-high 18 kills and was joined in double figures by Rang with 11. Bishop added 43 assists and Kylie Adams had 14 digs.

The Panthers were held to a .121 attack percentage with 30 kills against 18 errors in 99 swings. Olivia Kirksey was the lone player to reach double figures with 11 kills. Gabrielle Kirker had 15 assists and Kelsey Shoup had 16 digs.

The Tritons return to the court next Friday (Sept. 9) as they travel across the river to Lebanon, Ill., to take on Maryville at 11:30 a.m. and McKendree at 3:30 p.m. in a tri-angular match at McKendree.
