Fourth Quarter Rally Comes up Short as UMSL Women’s Hoops Falls to UIndy 58-53

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team rallied from 12 down to tie the game but couldn't get over the hump in its 58-53 loss to Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis. The Tritons drop to 5-9, 3-5 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 8-8, 4-4 GLVC.

UMSL trailed 40-28 with 3:49 left to go in the third quarter but closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the UIndy lead to five heading into the final quarter. Kiara Stewart scored all seven points in that run for the Tritons.

The Hounds scored the first two points of the final period but UMSL countered with a 10-4 run to get within 46-45 with 4:15 to go on a jumper from Stewart. The Tritons had a chance to take its first lead of the game a minute later but Morgan Ramthun only made 1-of-2 at the foul line to tie the game at 46. It was the first time the game had been tied since the opening quarter.

UIndy regained the lead on the ensuing possession as Jada Patton hit a running jumper. UMSL had a chance to tie the game on the other end but Stewart was whistled for an offensive foul underneath the basket.

The Greyhounds extended their lead to 50-46 as Liv Becker scored off a rebound of her own miss with 1:44 remaining.

Amaya Blake brought the Tritons back to within two with a jumper after Stewart grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer from Olivia Mezan. UMSL was unable to get a stop on the other end as Caroline Jakaitis nearly lost the ball but recovered it and scored on a jumper in the lane to push the margin back to four with less than a minute to play.

The Tritons again closed the gap to two as Stewart hit two free throws but Ramthun fouled Patton driving to the hole with 0:26 left and Patton hit both free throws to make it a four-point game again.

Ramthun was fouled on an inbounds pass on the other end but was only able to make 1-of-2 at the line to cut the lead to three points.

Forced to foul, UMSL sent Elena Wells to the line who it 1-of-2 to extend the lead back to four. Ramthun missed a jumper on the other end as Patton got the rebound and was fouled. She hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it a five-point game with 0:15 remaining.

Blake drove to the basket and hit a layup to bring the Tritons within three but that would be the closest they got as Wells hit two free throws with six seconds left to seal the victory for UIndy.

UMSL shot 38.5 percent (20-for-52) from the field in the contest but was 0-for-10 from three and shot 54 percent at the foul line. Stewart, Blake and Jalysa Stokes finished with 12 points apiece while Ramthun added 11 points. Stewart also grabbed 11 rebounds to record her second straight double-double.

The Greyhounds were held to just 33 percent (17-for-52) from the floor in the contest but were 5-of-12 from three and shot 79 percent at the foul line. Wells finished with a game-high 15 points in the contest while Patton added 13 points.

The Tritons conclude their three-game road trip this Monday (Jan. 16) as they travel to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis at 1 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
