ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 11th ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team dropped its second straight at Lewis 82-64 on Monday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Tritons drop to 14-3, 6-3 GLVC while the Flyers improve to 6-10, 2-7 GLVC.
Lewis opened the game scoring the first 10 points and held UMSL scoreless for the first four-plus minutes until
Victor Nwagbaraocha hit a three to get the Tritons on the board. The Flyers then ran off another seven straight to extend its lead to 14 on a three-pointer from Atakan Sahinkaya.
UMSL cut Lewis' lead to 23-13 after
Drew Cisse hit 1-of-2 at the foul line with 10:16 left in the opening half. The Flyers used a 15-8 run over the next 5:46 to build its largest lead of the game at 38-21 on a layup by Devon Vanderheydt.
The Tritons closed the half on a 15-5 run to cut Lewis' lead to seven points at the break.
UMSL scored the first points of the second half to get within five but weren't able to get any closer than that the rest of the way.
Lewis pulled away with a 15-4 run to extend its lead to 16 and wouldn't see its lead dip below double digits until
Donovan Vickers hit a three with 4:35 remaining to make it a nine-point game.
The Flyers ended the game on a 12-2 run for the final margin.
The Tritons were held to 45 percent (24-for-53) shooting from the field in the contest including 8-of-26 from three but did shoot 80 percent at the foul line. Vickers finished with 14 points in the contest while
Isaiah Fuller added 10 more.
Lewis shot 57 percent (31-for-54) from the floor in the contest, was 8-of-13 from three and shot 75 percent at the charity stripe. It outrebounded UMSL 36-to-21 and had 19 assists on the 31 made field goals. Beau Frericks finished with a game-high 18 points. He was joined in double figures by Vanderheydt with 15 points while Jamere Hill added 12 and Sahinkaya finished with 10.
The Tritons return home this Thursday (Jan. 19) to take on Quincy at 7:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
