ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team fell to Quincy 79-69 on Thursday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons drop to 6-10, 4-6 GLVC while the Hawks move to 8-10, 4-6 GLVC.
UMSL scored the first bucket of the game on a layup by
Morgan Ramthun but that would be its only lead of the half as Quincy scored eight of the next 10 points to build a four-point lead after Beth Matas Martin hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
The Tritons got back to within one after a three-pointer from
Jalysa Stokes at the 5:50 mark of the opening period but the Hawks closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a seven-point lead into the second stanza.
Quincy extended its run scoring seven of the first nine points of the frame to build its largest lead of the half at 25-13 on a three-pointer from Matas Martin. UMSL got two free throws from
Kiara Stewart and a jumper from Stokes to cut the margin to eight but the Hawks countered with back-to-back buckets to extend the lead back to double figures.
The Tritons finished the half on an 11-6 run to cut the Hawk lead to seven at the break.
UMSL began the third quarter on a 10-0 run and took its first lead since early in the game on a jumper from Stokes. The lead grew to as many as three after a layup from Stewart with 6:29 left in the third quarter. Quincy outscored the Tritons 20-8 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 55-46 lead into the final quarter.
The Hawks began the fourth period scoring 10 of the first 15 points took its largest lead of the game at 65-51 after a free throw from Cymirah Williams. UMSL cut it to eight in the final minute of the game but was unable to get any closer as Quincy hit two free throws with 0:08 left to seal the win.
The Tritons were held to 41 percent (26-for-64) shooting from the field in the contest, were 2-of-10 from three but did shoot 94 percent (15-for-16) at the charity stripe. Stokes finished with a game-high 27 points while Stewart added 13 points and 11 rebounds and Ramthun 13 points as well.
The Hawks shot 54 percent (30-for-56) in the contest including 6-of-14 from downtown and shot 77 percent at the foul line. Matas Martin led five Quincy players in double figures with 21 points. Grace Flanagan and Sarah Nelson added 15 points apiece while Williams finished with 12 points and Emma Knipe chipped in with 10 points.
UMSL concludes its brief two-game home stand on Saturday hosting Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m.
