ST. LOUIS – The 16th ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team turned in an impressive performance in its 89-62 win over Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 16-3, 8-3 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 12-7, 6-5 GLVC.
UMSL shot a season-high 60.3 percent from the field in the contest including 65 percent from beyond the arc.
Victor Nwagbaraocha led four Tritons in double figures in scoring with 21 points. He was joined by
Donovan Vickers with 20 points while
Isaiah Fuller and
Bowen Sandquist finished with 14 and 12 points respectively.
UIS scored the first bucket of the game but after that it was all UMSL as it scored 14 straight and held the Prairie Stars scoreless for nearly 6:30. UIS got as close as seven but the Tritons scored 10 of the next 14 points to extend its lead to 27-11 after Nwagbarocha converted a conventional three-point play.
UMSL took its largest lead of the half at 41-20 after a three-pointer from
Matt Enright. The Prairie Stars closed the half on a 5-2 run to cut the Triton lead to 18 at the half.
The Tritons opened the second half on an 18-10 run to extend its lead to 61-35 after a layup from Nwagbaraocha with 14:08 left.
That lead grew to as many as 32 at 71-39 with less than 10 minutes to play after a jumper on the break by Fuller.
UIS went on a 22-9 run over the next five minutes to cut the margin to under 20 but wouldn't get closer than that as UMSL ended the game scoring nine of the final 10 points for the final margin.
The Tritons hit 35-of-58 field goal attempts including 11-of-17 from three and shot 80 percent at the foul line.
The Prairie Stars were held to 41 percent shooting, was 7-of-25 from three and shot 54 percent at the foul line. Max Kummert led UIS with 13 points while Jacob Hanna and Jack Weber had 10 points each.
UMSL heads back out on the road next weekend as it travels to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Mabee Center.
