ST. LOUIS – The fourth ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season on Thursday with an 88-81 win over Maryville on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 13-1, 5-1 GLVC while the Saints drop to 10-5, 3-4 GLVC.
Maryville opened the game with back-to-back buckets to take an early four-point lead less than a minute into the game.
Victor Nwagbaraocha got UMSL going with six straight points and then
Matt Enright added a layup and
Mayson Quartlebaum hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Tritons a 9-4 lead 4:11 into the contest.
The Saints countered with a 10-2 over the next 3:11 to regain the lead at 14-11 on a layup from Colin Schuler.
The two sides went back and forth over the next five-plus minutes and were tied at 20 after a layup by Dewayne Vass.
UMSL retook the lead on a three-pointer from
Donovan Vickers with 6:57 left in the half. His three sparked a 10-2 run for the Tritons and he accounted for eight of those points.
UMSL extended its lead to 38-27 to after a three from
Bowen Sandquist with 1:44 remaining in the half.
Maryville cut the lead to single digits on back-to-back layups from Ben Palacios and Tutu Chisholm but Vickers scored the last of his 15 points in the half with a layup just before the buzzer to give the Tritons a 40-31 lead at the break.
The Saints opened the second half on a 15-6 run to tie the game at 46 on two free throws from Harrison Vickers with 15:16 to play.
Sandquist gave UMSL the lead right back on the next possession hitting the first of his six threes' in the stanza. It would be a lead the Tritons wouldn't relinquish.
UMSL went on a 28-17 run over the next 12 minutes to build its largest lead of the game at 77-63 on a jumper from Vickers with 3:28 left.
Maryville didn't go away quietly getting to within five in the final minute, but the Tritons sealed the win by going 6-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch.
UMSL finished the game shooting 49 percent (33-for-67) from the field including 11-of-23 from three and shot 79 percent at the charity stripe. It outrebounded the Saints 34-to-24 and its bench outscored Maryville's 47-to-27.
Vickers had a game and career-high 24 points in the contest to lead four Tritons in double figures. Sandquist finished with 21 points,
Janeir Harris added 11 points and
Drew Cisse had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Saints shot 62 percent (34-for-55) from the field in the contest, were 8-of-20 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. Vass led Maryville with 23 points wile Palacios added 15 points and Vickers had 13 points.
UMSL begins a three-game road trip next Thursday as it travels across the river to take on McKendree at 5:30 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
