Tritons Record Several Season Highs in 80-68 Win over Maryville

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team scored a season-high 80 points in an 80-68 win over Maryville on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons snapped their two-game losing streak to improve to 4-8, 2-4 GLVC while the Saints drop to 10-4, 5-2 GLVC.

UMSL also recorded season-highs in field goals made (28), three-point field goals made (8), field goal percentage (57.1 percent) and three-point field goal percentage (72.7 percent).

The Tritons scored the first points of the game on a layup by Morgan Ramthun but Maryville countered on the other end with a three-pointer from Haidyn Pitsch to take its only lead of the game. UMSL took the lead for good on a jumper from Amaya Blake sparking a 9-0 run over 2:22 stretch. The Saints got a conventional three-point play from Carsyn Fearday to cut the margin to five.

The Tritons extended the lead back to double digits with seven straight points as Blake hit a three and Ramthun and Shania Liburd added two points apiece. Pitsch then hit her second three of the quarter to cut the lead to nine.

UMSL closed the quarter on a 10-2 run behind five points from Jalysa Stokes, three points from Olivia Mezan and two more from Liburd to take a 28-11 lead into the second quarter.

Blake hit a three on the Tritons first possession of the second frame to extend its lead to 20 but Maryville countered with eight straight to get back within 12 after a jumper in the paint by Taylor Kirby.

UMSL came right back with nine in a row to build its largest lead of the half at 40-19 on a jumper by Liburd with 3:54 left. The Saints closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to cut the Tritons lead to 14 at the break.

UMSL began the second half on an 8-2 run to extend its halftime lead to 20. Maryville chipped away with a 13-3 run to cut the lead to 53-43 after a three-pointer from Antoinette Mussorici with 1:59 left in the stanza. The Tritons scored five of the final nine points of the quarter to take an 11-point cushion into the last 10 minutes.

The Saints got as close as 69-63 in the final period after a layup from Carsyn Fearday with 2:20 left but that would be the closest they got though as UMSL ended the game on an 11-5 run to secure the victory. Mezan hit a big three as the shot expired to ignite that final run. The Tritons hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final 50 seconds to seal the win.

UMSL hit 28-of-49 shots from the field including 8-of-11 from three and were 16-for-21 at the foul line. It outrebounded Maryville 37-to-26. Stokes finished with a game and career-high 26 points to lead five Tritons in double figures. Ramthun added 14 points, Kiara Stewart had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Blake and Liburd had 11 points each.

The Saints were held to 37 percent shooting (25-for-68) from the field in the contest, were 8-of-27 from three and shot 91 percent at the foul line. Mussorici led three Maryville players in double figures with 23 points, 19 in the second half, while Fearday and Pitsch added 11 points each.
