ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team snapped its two-game skid with a 62-57 win over Parkside on Tuesday afternoon at Moloney Arena on the campus of Maryville University. The Tritons improve to 2-3 while the Rangers drop to 2-3.
The two sides traded baskets over the first 4:30 minutes with Parkside in front 8-6 after Jack Rose knocked down a three. UMSL went on an 11-4 run after that three to build a five-point cushion after a three-pointer from
Matt Enright but a four-point play by Rose cut UMSL's lead to one with less than nine minutes to play in the opening half.
The Tritons responded scoring 14 of the next 19 points to build its largest lead of the half at 31-21 after another Enright three. Enright had two three's in that run while
Mayson Quartlebaum added four points and
Savon Wykle and
Emanuel Prospere II had two points apiece.
The Rangers cut the deficit to seven at the break on a three by Josiah Palmer.
Enright picked up where he left off to start the second half knocking down his fourth three of the contest to put UMSL back up by 10 on its first possession.
Parkside scored four straight to pull within six but back-to-back baskets from
Kris O'Neal II and Prospere II pushed the lead back to 10.
The Rangers cut the lead to three with under 11 minutes to go. Quartlebaum and
Troy Glover II quieted the run with layups to push the lead to 51-44 two minutes later.
Both sides struggled to score for the next 3:30 until Nick Brown scored on the break to cut the Triton lead to five.
UMSL wouldn't let Parkside get closer than four points down the stretch answering each time the Rangers to got close to pick up the victory.
The Tritons shot 53 percent (25-for-47) from the floor including 6-of-18 from three and shot 60 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded Parkside 33-to-27 and outscored them 38-to-22 in points in the paint. Enright finished with a team-high 16 points to lead three UMSL players in double figures. He was joined in double figures by Prospere II with 12 points to go along with six assists while Quartlebaum had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Parkside was held to 42 percent (24-for-57) shooting in the contest including 6-of-23 from three and shot 50 percent at the foul line. Palmer led all scorers with 20 points while Colin O'Rourke had 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Tritons play their final game before the Thanksgiving break on Wednesday afternoon taking on No. 17 Northwest Missouri State at 3:15 p.m. at Moloney Arena.
