ST. LOUIS – Troy Glover II finished with a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team to a 76-73 win over No. 16 Bentley on Sunday in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Jenkins Fieldhouse in Lakeland, Fla.
The Tritons improve to 1-1 while the Falcons drop to 1-1.
UMSL got off to slow start making only two of its first six attempts from the floor while Bentley was 4-of-5 and built an early seven-point advantage. The Tritons cut the deficit to three after a jumper in the paint from
Matt Enright but the Falcons countered with seven in a row to build its largest lead of the contest at 24-14 after a layup by Isaac Martin with less than nine minutes to play in the half.
UMSL got hot over the final eight minutes of the stanza making nine of its final 14 attempts from the field and ended the frame on a 20-5 run to take a 34-29 lead into the locker room. Glover II had eight points in that run while
Emanuel Prospere II added five and
Terrell Kabala chipped in with four.
Prospere II opened the second half with a three to extend the Triton lead to eight 1:10 into the stanza. Bentley answered with a 22-9 run over the next seven minutes to regain a four-point cushion after a three-pointer from Joe Carroll.
The Falcons extended its lead to five after a pair of free throws but UMSL came right back thanks to 10-2 run to retake the lead at 62-59 after two free throws from Glover II with 5:27 remaining.
Bentley tied the game with a three in transition from Kellan Bochenek but never retook the lead as the Tritons scored seven of the next eight points to seize a six-point lead after a three from Enright with 3:01 left.
UMSL extended its lead to eight after a jumper from Enright with 71 seconds remaining. The Falcons made a push in the final minute getting to within two with 0:19 left before Kabala sealed the win with a dunk on the break with 0:15 to go.
The Tritons shot 55 percent (16-for-29) from the field in the second half including 6-of-11 from three to finish the game shooting 50 percent (31-for-62) from the floor and 38 percent from three. They outrebounded Bentley 38-to-31 and outscored them 42-to-20 in the paint.
Glover II was joined in double figures by Prospere II with 18, Enright added 15 and
Janeir Harris had 13. Enright had a game-high six assists.
The Falcons shot 42 percent (24-for-57) from the floor in the contest including 10-of-29 (35 percent) from three and shot 79 percent at the charity stripe. Ivan Misic and Zach Laput led Bentley with 23 and 22 points respectively. Cash McClure secured nine rebounds.
UMSL is back in action on Thursday (Nov. 16) when it travels to Winona, Minn., to take on Winona State at 6 p.m. at McCown Gymnasium.
