ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team rallied from a 12-point second half to defeat William Jewell 73-69 in overtime on Thursday evening at the Petty Sports and Recreation Complex on the campus of Missouri Baptist University. The Tritons improve to 3-4, 1-0 GLVC while the Cardinals drop to 5-2, 0-1 GLVC.
UMSL jumped out to the early lead and led by as many as seven with 7:50 left in the first half but Jewell closed the frame strong outscoring the Tritons 14-2 over the remainder of the half to take a five-point lead into the intermission.
Jewell extended its lead to as many as 12 at 54-42 with 7:38 left after an old fashioned three-point play by Trey Shannon. UMSL chipped away at the lead scoring 11 of the next 12 points to pull within two after a layup from
Savon Wykle with 3:55 remaining in the second half.
The Cardinals extended their lead to four after two free throws from Isaac Patterson with 2:34 to play in the stanza but the Tritons kept battling and retook the lead on a three from
Terrell Kabala with 0:48 to go.
Jewell answered with a three to retake the lead and then after a turnover, Patterson hit a pair of free throws to put the Cardinals in front 64-61 with 0:07 left in regulation.
Kabala was fouled on the ensuing possession and made the first free throw then missed the second and
Troy Glover II got the offensive rebound and scored on a put back to tie the game to force overtime.
The two sides traded scores for the first 3:20 of the extra frame until
Matt Enright gave UMSL the lead for good with a layup. The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game but Eli Wingert made only 1-of-2 at the foul line on Jewell's next possession.
Kabala iced the game scoring on an old fashioned three-point play with 0:12 left. Jewell had one more shot but Jordan Jermain's shot was off the mark and Glover II secured the rebound to end the game.
The Tritons shot 51 percent (32-for-63) from the floor in the contest, 3-of-13 from three and just 55 percent at the foul line. Enright led all scorers with a game-high 16 points and was one of four UMSL players to reach double figures in scoring. Kabala and
Mayson Quartlebaum had 15 points each while
Emanuel Prospere II finished with 14 points.
The Cardinals were held to 38 percent (22-for-58) shooting the contest including 10-of-28 from three and shot 79 percent at the charity stripe. Shannon led four Jewell players in double figures in scoring with 14 points.
The Tritons host Rockhurst in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
