QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss last Saturday with an impressive 75-66 win over Quincy at Pepsi Arena on Thursday evening in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons improve to 4-5, 2-1 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 4-5, 1-2 GLVC.
UMSL never trailed in this one jumping out to an early six-point lead to start the game and only let Quincy get as close as one in the contest. The Hawks countered the Tritons 6-0 start with a 6-2 run of its own but UMSL answered with a 13-4 run over the span of five minutes to build its largest lead of the half at 21-10 on a three-pointer from
Matt Enright.
The Hawks wouldn't go quietly as they went on a 13-3 run over the next 4:30 to pull within 24-23 on a three-pointer from Isaiah Foster.
The Tritons closed the first half strong scoring 13 of the final 22 points to take a 37-32 lead into the break.
UMSL extended its lead to eight points early in the second half but Quincy kept battling cutting the Triton advantage to three after a free throw from Foster with less than 14 minutes remaining in the contest.
UMSL pulled away over the next five minutes thanks to a 12-4 run behind six points from Enright and three points each from
Savon Wykle and
Sam Bledsoe.
The Hawks had one more run in them getting to within six at 60-54 with 6:31 to go after a jumper from Jason Wujek but the Tritons slammed the door shut on the comeback scoring seven straight points to take its largest lead of the game at 67-54 on Bledsoe's second trey of the night with less than five minutes to play.
Quincy wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the way as UMSL secured the nine-point victory.
The Tritons shot 45 percent (28-for-62) from the field in the contest including 10-of-25 from three but shot just 56 percent at the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Hawks 37-to-29 and outscored them in the paint 32-to-18.
Enright led five UMSL players in double figures with a game-high 18 points while
Troy Glover II finished with a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Wykle and
Mayson Quartlebaum had 13 points apiece and
Terrell Kabala chipped in with 10 points.
Quincy was held to 43 percent (22-for-51) shooting from the floor in the contest but was 3-of-10 from beyond the arc and shot 75 percent at the foul line. John Kelly III led five Hawks in double figures with 15 points. Foster added 13 points while Wujek and Nate Shockey had 11 points each and Zion Richardson finished with 10 points.
UMSL continues its five-game road trip on Saturday as it travels to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield at 3 p.m. at The Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC). The Prairie Stars extended their winning streak to six with a 97-70 win over McKendree on Thursday evening.
