QUINCY, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team jumped out to an 11-0 lead and wouldn't look back as it led wire-to-wire in its 62-44 over Quincy on Thursday evening at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons improve to 5-3, 3-2 GLVC while Hawks drop to 3-6, 3-2 GLVC.
UMSL hit five of its first six shots to begin the game and held Quincy scoreless the first 3:22 until Cymirah Williams hit a jumper to end the run. The Hawks climbed back to within five with less than four minutes to play in the opening frame but the Tritons countered with back-to-back baskets from
Brooke Woodyard and
Morgan Ramthun to stretch the lead back to nine.
Quincy opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to pull within two but that would be the closest it got the rest of the half as UMSL went another 11-0 run to regain its double digit lead and took a 36-21 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Tritons shot 50 percent (16-for-32) from the field in the first 20 minutes including 2-of-7 from three and 67 percent at the foul line.
UMSL opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to build its largest lead to that point at 21 on a layup from
Jalysa Stokes with 7:13 left in the frame. Ramthun and
Amaya Blake each had three points in that run.
The Tritons put the game away with a 9-2 run to begin the final stanza as they built their largest lead of the night at 60-37 on a free throw from Ramthun with 7:27 left in the contest. UMSL was outscored 7-2 over the final seven minutes of the game but it didn't matter as it secured the victory to snap its two-game losing streak.
Ramthun led all scorers with 19 points in the contest while Stokes added 14 points and Blake finished with 11 points.
Audrey Martinez-Stewart had nine rebounds and three assists in the game.
The Tritons finished the contest shooting 45 percent (26-for-58) from the field including 2-of-8 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. They were outrebounded by the Hawks 35-to-34 but outscored Quincy by 20 points in the paint.
The Hawks were held to 28 percent (18-for-65) shooting from the floor including 3-of-24 from three and shot 71 percent at the foul line. Williams led Quincy with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
UMSL continues its three-game road trip on Saturday as it travels to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m. at The Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC).
