SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team dropped its third straight game with a 69-58 loss at Drury on Saturday afternoon at the O'Reilly Family Events Center. The Tritons fall to 18-7, 10-7 GLVC while the Panthers improve to 8-16, 4-12 GLVC.
Drury jumped out to an early three-point lead but UMSL ran off 10 of the next 13 points including seven straight to take a 12-8 lead after a jumper from
Isaiah Fuller. Fuller and
Matt Enright combined for all 10 points in the run.
The Panthers tied the game at 16 thanks to an 8-4 run but the Tritons countered with eight straight to take a 24-16 lead on a three-pointer from
Victor Nwagbaraocha with 6:20 left in the opening half.
Drury cut the deficit to six after a jumper from Preston Cook but UMSL ran off seven of the next nine points to take its largest lead of the game at 31-20 after an old fashioned three-point play from
Mayson Quartlebaum with 2:36 remaining in the half.
The Tritons went cold the rest of the half as the Panthers scored the final five points to cut UMSL's lead to 31-25 at the break.
Drury extended its run at the start of the second half scoring 10 of the first 14 points to tie the game at 35 after a three-pointer from Logan Applegate at the 15:56 mark.
The Tritons countered with an 8-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 43-35 after a layup by
Donovan Vickers. UMSL was unable to put the Panthers away though as Drury scored nine of the next 11 points to cut the Triton lead to 45-44 with 9:14 left.
Fuller extended the lead to three with a jumper on the ensuing possession but the Panthers responded with 13 straight points to build a 10-point lead. Drury hit three three-pointers in the run with two of those belonging to Applegate.
UMSL wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Panthers held the Tritons to their lowest point total of the season.
Drury shot 50 percent from the field in the second half including six three's as it outscored UMSL 44-27 in the final 20 minutes.
Applegate scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Panthers. Cook finished with 11 points and Riley Naeger added 10 points.
Nwagbaraocha led four Tritons in double figures with 16 points. He was joined in double figures by Fuller with 12 points while Enright and
Drew Cisse had 10 points apiece.
UMSL concludes its three-game road trip next Thursday against crosstown rival Maryville at 7:30 p.m. at Moloney Arena.
