ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team dropped its season finale to McKendree 86-79 on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building.
The Tritons season ended when Quincy scored on a last second shot at Rockhurst to move past UMSL in the GLVC Point Rating System that determined the eight teams for the conference tournament.
The Tritons fell into an early hole but came back to take a 26-21 lead by the end of the opening quarter as both teams shot the ball well in the stanza. UMSL shot 71 percent in the frame while the Bearcats (12-15, 9-11 GLVC) connected on 72 percent of their attempts.
The Tritons struggled to score in the second 10 minutes while McKendree remained hot and outscored UMSL 22-10 to take a 43-36 lead into the locker room at the break. The Tritons were 4-of-14 from the field in the quarter while the Bearcats hit 8 of their 13 attempts.
UMSL outscored McKendree 18-12 over the first seven minutes of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 55-54 after a jumper in the paint by
Kiara Stewart but the Bearcats closed the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a six-point cushion into the final stanza.
McKendree extended its lead to as many as 12 halfway through the final quarter but the Tritons fought back thanks to an 11-2 run behind seven points from
Jalysa Stokes while
Olivia Mezan added three and Stewart had the final one to get within 74-71 with 3:01 remaining.
UMSL was unable to get any stops in the final three minutes as the Bearcats scored on their final six possessions to seal the victory.
The Tritons shot 57 percent (35-for-62) from the floor in the contest including 4-of-10 from three but shot 45 percent at the foul line. Stokes led four UMSL players in double figures with 18 points while
Morgan Ramthun and
Amaya Blake had 16 points apiece and Stewart added 15 points and seven rebounds in her final game as a Triton.
UMSL had no answers for Clare Breden and Naomi McDaniel as the two combined to score 50 of McKendree's points in the game. Breden had a game-high 29 points while McDaniel finished with 21 and Erin Golden added 14. The Bearcats shot 58 percent (32-for-55) from the field in the contest including 3-of-10 from downtown and shot 83 percent at the foul line.
The Tritons finish their season with a record of 9-17, 7-13 GLVC.
