ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its two games on Sunday at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kan. The Tritons defeated Southwest Minnesota State 5-0 in their first game of the day before falling to Emporia State 5-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1 – UMSL 5 Southwest Minnesota State 0
UMSL (4-5) struck first scoring four times in the top of the third.
Irene Travis led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on
McKenzie Lamos' double to right center.
Courtney Settles followed with a two-run homer to right to make it 3-0.
Megan Brown singled through the left side of the infield, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on
Ashley Borowitz's single to second for the final run of the inning.
The Tritons added an insurance run in the fifth on three hits.
Corinne Daley and
Annie Scaramuzzi led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then Daley scored on Borowitz's second run scoring single of the contest.
That was all the run support that Scaramuzzi needed as she held the Mustangs (0-4) to just four hits in the contest while striking out six to earn her second complete game shutout of the season.
UMSL had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Travis, Settles and Borowitz with two apiece.
Game 2 – Emporia State 5 UMSL 1
The Hornets (9-5) took the early lead scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Alexis Dial led off the inning with a single, stole second and scored on Jayda VanAckeren's single to left. VanAckeren advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Gracie Rabe's double.
Emporia broke it open in the fourth as Hailey Garnett drove in three runs with a double down the left field line.
The Tritons got a run back in the sixth.
Riley Schultz drove in
Megan Brown with a double to center with two out in the inning.
UMSL threatened again in the seventh but
Anna VanGundy was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on Lamos' double to left center.
The Tritons outhit the Hornets 10-7 in the contest with Travis, Brown and VanGundy recording two hits each. Brown allowed five runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work to drop to 0-3 on the season.
UMSL is scheduled to host Davenport in its home opener this Thursday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
