ST. LOUIS – Isaiah Fuller matched his career-high with 31 points but it wasn't enough as the No. 18/25 Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team fell to Rockhurst 85-77 on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons fall to 18-5, 10-5 GLVC while the Hawks improve to 13-9, 8-6 GLVC.
The loss snapped UMSL's 16-game home winning streak.
The Tritons took the early lead as Fuller scored on a layup less than two minutes into the contest. Rockhurst responded with the next five points and held the lead for most of the half.
The Hawks led by as many as seven in the frame after a layup from Timaris Brown made it 26-19 with 7:27 left in the half.
UMSL closed the half on a 14-6 run over the final 7:27 to take a 33-32 lead into the locker room at the break. The Tritons scored eight straight points during one stretch highlighted by a dunk by
Mayson Quartlebaum.
The lead changed hands six times to start the second half as the two sides traded buckets.
UMSL led 40-39 after an old fashioned three-point play from Fuller before Rockhurst took control with a 13-1 run over a stretch of 3:39. Aidan Clarey, Rich Byhre and Jake Auer had three points each in that run.
The Tritons countered with a 10-4 run of its own to cut the Hawk lead to four with 11:12 to play after a steal and score from
Matt Enright. That would be as close as UMSL got though as Rockhurst came right back with a 10-2 run to build a 12-point lead.
The Hawks extended its lead to as many as 13 at 71-58 after two free throws from Byhre with 5:34 remaining.
The Tritons got to within seven in the final minute but Rockhurst sealed the game at the foul line hitting three of their final four free throws.
UMSL finished the game shooting 46 percent (28-for-61) from the field including 7-of-19 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line. Joining Fuller in double figures was Enright with 14 while Quartlebaum added 13.
Rockhurst won the battle on the glass outrebounding the Tritons 40-to-24 including 9-5 on the offensive end and outscored them 15-2 in second chance points. The Hawks shot 53 percent (30-for-57) from the floor including 8-of-20 from three and shot 90 percent at the foul line.
Davit Kakushadze led four Rockhurst players in double figures with 19 points. Byhre and Brown had 18 points apiece while Auer finished with 15 points.
UMSL begins a three-game road trip next Thursday at Missouri S&T at 7:30 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building in Rolla.
