INDIANAPOLIS – The second seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team used a 25-5 run in the second half to defeat seventh seeded Parkside 85-60 on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Midwest Regional at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis. The Tritons improve to 22-10 while the Rangers end their season with a record of 21-9.
The game was tied at 48 with 15:18 left when UMSL made its run. The run started with a jumper from
Janeir Harris as the Tritons scored nine of the next 10 points to build a 57-49 lead with 12:39 remaining. Parkside got back-to-back buckets from Josiah Palmer and Jamir Simpson to cut UMSL's lead to four at the 12:13 mark.
That would be the closest it got the rest of the game as the Tritons scored 16 straight points over the next 7:13 to build a 20-point lead.
Donovan Vickers had the hot hand in the run scoring 11 of those points hitting three 3-pointers and a jumper.
Isaiah Fuller and
Victor Nwagbaraocha combined for the other five points in the run.
The Rangers cut UMSL's lead to 15 points with a 7-2 run before the Tritons sealed the win scoring the final 10 points of the contest.
UMSL hit its first 10 shots to start the second half and shot 71 percent in the stanza connecting on 20 of its 28 attempts including 6-of-12 from three. Fuller led all scorers with 26 points in the contest while Nwagbaraocha and Vickers finished with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Parkside shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes but the Tritons defense looked them down in the second half as they were just 9-of-25 (36 percent) from the field and 4-of-11 from three. Palmer led three Rangers in double figures with 19 points. Simpson and Rasheed Bello had 14 points apiece.
UMSL will take on sixth seeded Ferris State in the Midwest Regional Semifinal on Sunday (March 12) at 4 p.m. (CDT).
