Tritons Bounce Back With Two Wins On Monday

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team bounced back from having its three-game losing streak snapped on Saturday with a pair of wins on Monday at the Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. The Tritons (12-10) defeated Purdue Northwest 1-0 in the first game of the day and then after a two and a half rain delay beat Franklin Pierce 5-2.

Game 1 – UMSL 1 Purdue Northwest 0
The first game on Monday was a pitcher's duel between UMSL's Ashley Borowitz and Purdue Northwest's (11-8) Maddison Roop. Borowitz came out on top in the battle throwing a complete game three-hit shutout with a pair of strikeouts and no walks to improve to 3-3. Roop gave up the lone run on 10 hits while striking out five and walking one to fall to 3-2.

The Tritons had their chances in three of the first four innings but left seven runners on base before breaking through against Roop in the fifth. Courtney Settles led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on Megan Brown's single through the left side of the infield. Corinne Daley fouled out to left which allowed Settles and Brown to advance to second and third with one out. Irene Travis drove in Settles with a sacrifice fly to right.

Borowitz allowed two of her three hits in the second inning then retired the next 15 Pride hitters until Grace Wilson hit a pinch-hit single through the left side of the infield with two out in the seventh. Borowitz retired Madison Schultz on a foul out to Jamie Widule to seal the victory.

Settles, Brown and Travis led UMSL with two hits apiece in the contest.

Game 2 – UMSL 5 Franklin Pierce 2
The Ravens (12-6) took the early lead as Bella Williams hit a home run to right for her second roundtripper of the season.

The Tritons took the lead in the third scoring three runs on four hits. Daley drove in Brown and Maddie Snemis with a single up the middle. Daley stole second and scored on Travis' double to center.

UMSL added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Daley singled to third with one out in the inning and scored on Travis' first home run of the season to make it 5-1.

Franklin Pierce got a run back in the sixth on Haley Bigwood's second home run of the season.

The Ravens brought the tying to the plate with two out in the seventh but Jenna Towle struck out Ashley Cangiano to clinch the win.

The Tritons had nine hits in the contest and were led by Travis with three hits while Daley and Anna VanGundy added two hits apiece. Towle threw a complete game allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk to improve to 4-2.

UMSL plays its final two games in Florida on Tuesday taking on Hillsdale at 8 a.m. (CDT) and New Haven at 10:15 a.m. (CDT). Both games will be at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
