ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 9-5 loss against Maryville in a non-conference contest at Weber Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Tritons fall to 11-10 while the Saints move to 11-6.
Maryville jumped on top in the bottom of the first on a solo home run off the bat of Michael Gould with one out in the inning. The Saints added to their lead with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and one more in the fifth.
Elias Stevens made it 2-0 in the third with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Jack Zebig. Stephen Randazzo drove in the second run of the frame with a single to third.
Gould drove in his second run of the game in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Matt Arnold.
Arnold made it 5-0 in the fifth drawing a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Stevens.
UMSL got two runs back in the sixth.
Braedon Stoakes led off the winning with a walk and then stole second.
Kameron Laskowski walked and then
Brandon Olion reached on an error by the first baseman to load the bases.
Justin Simard drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Stoakes.
Mitchell Green made it 5-2 with a double down the right field line to bring home Laskowski.
Maryville regained its five-run cushion in its half of the sixth as Stevens hit a two-run homer to right center. The Saints tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh. Gould drove in a run with a fielder's choice ground out to third and then Stevens drove in his fourth run of the game with a single through the left side of the infield.
The Tritons got back into the game in the eighth as
Carson Holin went deep hitting a three-run homer to left to cut Maryville's lead to four.
UMSL was held to five hits in the contest with Stoakes, Laskowski, Green, Holin and
Andrew Buescher recording one apiece.
Cody Brooks got the start on the mound in the contest and allowed three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings pitched to fall to 1-2 on the season.
The Tritons return to the diamond on Friday (March 24) as they travel to William Jewell for the start of a four-game series against the Cardinals.
