UMSL Men’s Hoops Advances To GLVC Championship With 82-56 Win over No. 7 Indianapolis

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Championship contest for the second straight season and third team in four years with an 82-56 win over seventh ranked and top seeded Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Lindenwood's Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.

Bowen Sandquist scored an UMSL career-high 30 points in the contest while Isaiah Fuller added 20 points and Janeir Harris finished with 11 points.

The game was back-and-forth for the first six minutes as both teams came out hot from beyond the arc combining for 10 three-point field goals made, five from each side.

The Greyhounds (26-4) led by as many as five at 16-11 after a three from Sean Craig but UMSL (21-9) countered with a 5-2 run to grab a 19-18 lead on a three from Victor Nwagbaraocha.

The two teams continued to trade baskets until Donovan Vickers gave the Tritons the lead for good with a jumper in the paint just past the midway point of the opening stanza. Vickers jumper sparked an 11-0 run for UMSL as it took its largest lead of the half at 31-22 on a jumper from Sandquist.

UIndy made a late run in the frame closing to within 33-30 after a jumper from Josiah Tynes with 1:40 left in the half.

The Tritons got a three from Vickers and a jumper from Fuller to extend its lead to eight points but the Hounds got two free throws in the closing seconds of the stanza to cut UMSL's lead to six at the break.

UIndy cut UMSL's lead to four early in the second half but wouldn't get any closer as the Tritons went on a 20-3 run over the next 7:30 minutes to build a 60-39 lead after a jumper by Vickers with 10:46 left in the contest.

The Greyhounds briefly cut the lead under 20 after two free throws from Tynes but UMSL went on another 11-3 run to put the game away on a three from Sandquist.

The Tritons largest lead of the game came with 3:17 left on a Drew Cisse dunk to make it 80-47.

UMSL shot 55 percent (33-for-60) from the floor in the contest including 12-of-25 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded UIndy 32-31 and turned 13 Hound turnovers into 20 points.

The Triton defense held the Greyhounds to a season-low 56 points while its field goal percentage of 37.3 percent was also a season low for UIndy. Tynes led the Hounds with 15 points while Jesse Bingham added 12 points.
