UMSL Baseball Picks Up Series Win With Split Against Winona State On Sunday

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team picked up its first series win of the season as it split its doubleheader against Winona State on Sunday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Tritons (7-9) dropped the opener 7-5 but won the nightcap 8-4.

Game 2 – UMSL 8 Winona State 4
UMSL scored the first run of the game in the nightcap with a run on two hits in the first. Braedon Stoakes led off the inning with a double down the right field line and scored later in the inning on a double steal attempt on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Warriors (1-7) tied the game in the third without a hit. Sean Menzel drove in the tying run with a bases loaded walk.

The Tritons regained the lead in their half of the third. With one out, Brandon Olion tripled down the right field line and scored on Justin Simard's ground out to second.

Winona tied the game in the in the fifth. With one out, Cooper Kapanke singled to center, advanced to third on Menzel's double to right and scored on Steele Beatty's sacrifice fly to center.

UMSL regained the lead in the fifth scoring six runs on two hits and two errors. Olion and Simard pulled off a double steal and Olion scored when the catcher's throw went into left field to make it 3-2. Jake Isaacs capped the inning with a two-run double to center driving in Bryce Kulinski and Jared Bryant.

The Warriors got single tallies in the sixth and eighth innings for the final margin.

The Tritons were outhit 10-7 in the contest and were led by Olion and Kulinski with two hits apiece. Nick Torres picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits in five innings pitched to even his record at 1-1.

Game 1 – UMSL 7 Winona State 5
UMSL jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. With one out, Kameron Laskowski and Olion singled back-to-back. With two out, Carson Holin drove in Laskowski with a single through the left side of the infield. The Tritons had a chance for more but a line out to short ended the inning.

The Warriors responded in the second loading the bases with no outs on a single and two walks. Mason Trocke hit a grand slam down the right field line to make it 4-1.

UMSL scored twice in the fifth to cut into the lead. Olion doubled down the left field line to drive in Stoakes who had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Simard drove in Olion with a single to right to make it 4-3.

Winona State scored three runs on two hits and an error in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3.

The Tritons scored a run in the sixth without a hit. They loaded the bases with one out and scored on Laskowski's walk bringing home Isaac Powers.

UMSL scored its final run in the seventh as Kulinski drove in Simard with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Tritons outhit the Warriors 9-8 in the contest and were led by Holin with three while Olion added a pair. Brady Krile took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched.

UMSL returns to the diamond this Friday (March 10) as it travels to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst at 6 p.m. It will be the start of nine straight on the road for the Tritons.
