ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team opened its Spring Break Trip with two wins on Tuesday at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla. The Tritons defeated Walsh 6-1 in their first game of the day and then rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan 6-5 in nine innings in game two.
Game 1 – UMSL 6 Walsh 1
UMSL (7-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning against the Cavaliers (3-7) on
Maddie Snemis' RBI double to right scoring
Corinne Daley. The Tritons added two more in the third.
Annie Scaramuzzi drove in
McKenzie Lamos with a single to short and later in the inning
Jenna Towle walked with the bases loaded to bring in Daley.
UMSL extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth as
Megan Brown drove in
Courtney Settles with a triple to left center.
Walsh got on the board in the home half of the fifth as Kaylee Nolte singled up the middle to drive in Clare Mewhinney.
The Tritons scored their final two runs in the sixth inning. Daley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Lamos and Scaramuzzi hit a sacrifice fly to center to score
Jamie Widule.
UMSL outhit the Cavaliers 9-4 in the contest and were led by Lamos with two hits and two runs scored.
Ashley Borowitz picked up her second straight complete game victory allowing one run on four hits while striking out six and issuing one walk to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Game 2 – UMSL 6 Kentucky Wesleyan 5 9 innings
The Tritons fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first against the Panthers (6-15). With one out, Allie Dunn singled to left to bring in Augusta Garr. Back-to-back walks to Kennedy Matheis and Grace Colvin brought home Megan Matheis with the second run of the inning. Towle replaced Brown in the circle and got the final two outs of the inning.
The Tritons cut KWC's lead in half in the third. Settles led off the inning with a double to left center. Widule pinch ran for her, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Brown's sacrifice fly to center.
The Panthers extended their lead with an unearned run each in the fifth and sixth innings.
UMSL got one of those runs back in the home half of the sixth. With two out, Scaramuzzi singled to second and advanced to second on a walk to Snemis.
Irene Travis doubled to left center to bring home Scaramuzzi. The Tritons had a chance to tie the game but Lamos grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
UMSL tied the game in the seventh. Settles led off the inning with a double to right center and went to third on Brown's single up the middle. With one out,
Riley Schultz singled up the middle to bring in Settles to make it 4-3. Brown and Schultz advanced to second and third on a groundout back to the pitcher for the second out of the inning. Brown scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
In the eighth Kentucky Wesleyan retook the lead on Immi Mann's sacrifice fly to left scoring Grace Colvin.
The Tritons tied the game in the bottom of the inning. With two out and the tying run at third Lamos reached on a dropped pop up by the third baseman which allowed UMSL to tie the game at 5-all. The Tritons held the Panthers scoreless in the top of the ninth and won it in the bottom of the inning.
With two out and the bases loaded, Snemis hit a ground ball to short. Colvin threw the ball to second but the umpire ruled that Sarah Linville was off the bag which allowed Brown to score the winning run.
UMSL outhit KWC 8-7 in the contest and was led by Settles with two hits. Towle picked up the win allowing three unearned on runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Tritons return to the diamond on Thursday taking on seventh ranked Grand Valley at 10:15 a.m. (CST) and Edinboro at 12:30 p.m. (CST) at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
