ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its doubleheader against Drury at Thompson Field on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. The Tritons dropped the opener 3-0 but won the nightcap 5-1. UMSL improves to 26-16, 12-6 GLVC while the Panthers drop to 21-21, 9-7 GLVC.
Game 1 – Drury 3 UMSL 0
The first game of the afternoon was a pitcher's duel between
Ashley Borowitz and Kristina Bettis as both pitchers were perfect through three innings.
The Panthers had the game's first scoring chance getting a runner to second with two out in the fourth but was left stranded as Borowitz got a groundout to third to end the inning.
UMSL loaded the bases with two out in the fifth but Bettis struck out
Maddie Snemis to end the inning.
The Tritons had another chance in the sixth getting a leadoff double from
Courtney Settles and
McKenzie Lamos was hit by a pitch but Bettis retired the next three batters to keep the game scoreless.
Drury broke through in its half of the sixth. With one out, Taylor Hartsell reached on an error by
Annie Scaramuzzi and went to second on the error. Rylee Kolb flew out to Snemis for the second out of the inning. Hartsell advanced to third on an error by Snemis and scored on the error for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Sydney Sneed hit a two-run home run to left to make it 3-0.
UMSL was held to just two hits in the contest with Settles and
Jamie Widule finishing with one apiece. Borowitz was the tough luck loser giving up three unearned runs on four hits while striking out four in the complete game effort.
Game 2 – UMSL 5 Drury 1
The Tritons took an early lead in the nightcap with a run in the second inning. With two out, Scaramuzzi,
Megan Brown and
Jenna Towle walked to load the bases.
Riley Schultz singled to right to drive in Scaramuzzi.
The Panthers tied the game in the third. With two out, Hartsell tripled to right and scored on Kolb's double to left.
UMSL retook the lead in the fifth. With two out, Lamos doubled to right to start the rally and scored on Travis' single to center.
The Tritons extended their lead in the sixth. Brown led off the inning with a double to left center. Schultz drove in her second run of the game with a squeeze bunt back to the circle scoring
Corinne Daley, running for Brown, to make it 3-1.
UMSL added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on Travis' two-run homer to center.
That was all the run support that Towle needed as she picked up the complete game victory allowing one run on five hits while striking out four to improve to 10-3.
UMSL concludes its eight-game road swing this Saturday (April 22) as it takes on cross-town rival Maryville in a doubleheader at the Maryville Softball Field at 11 a.m.
