Borowitz’s Game 2 Gem Gives Tritons Split Against Hawks

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team had its 12-game winning streak snapped with a 7-5 loss to Rockhurst in game one of its doubleheader but bounced back to win the nightcap 5-0 behind a five-hit complete game shutout from Ashley Borowitz to earn a split on Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field.

The Tritons improve to 23-11, 9-1 GLVC while the Hawks fall to 12-15, 7-3 GLVC.

Game 2 – UMSL 5 Rockhurst 0
Borowitz was dealing to start game two as she struck out the first six hitters and didn't allow a hit until the third. She had to navigate through trouble in the third and fourth innings to keep the game scoreless.

UMSL took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three straight singles. Courtney Settles led off the inning with a single up the middle. Corinne Daley followed with a single up the middle and then Irene Travis dropped a single into left center to load the bases with no one out. Settles scored the first run of the contest scoring on Megan Brown's double play ball to second.

Borowitz had to work out of trouble again in the fifth as she walked the leadoff hitter and a bunt single from Allison Shakiba put runners at first and second. Jaden Santoni sacrificed both runners with a bunt to Lamos at third for the first out of the inning. Borowitz then struck out Maya Gallagher and retired Avery Huffman on a groundout to Travis to end the threat.

The Tritons tacked on some insurance runs in the sixth sending eight hitters to the plate scoring four runs on five hits. Lamos led off the inning with a solo shot for her sixth roundtripper of the season. After a flyout, UMSL got three straight hits to extend their lead to 3-0 on Brown's RBI single up the middle. Annie Scaramuzzi drove in Travis with a groundout to second to make it 4-0 and Anna VanGundy reached on a single to the pitcher to drive in Brown with the final run of the contest.

That was all the run support the Borowitz needed as she held Rockhurst's bats in check to pick up her third complete game shutout of the season and improve to 8-3. She struck out seven in the contest while walking two.

Daley, Travis and Brown combined for six of the Tritons nine hits in the second game.

Game 1 – Rockhurst 7 UMSL 5
The Hawks took the early lead in game one as Huffman hit a one out home run to center in the top of the first.

UMSL came right back scoring two runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning getting RBI singles from Brown and Scaramuzzi to take a 2-1 lead.

Rockhurst countered scoring three runs without a hit and two throwing errors in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
The Tritons got one of those runs back in their half of the second as Settles doubled over Huffman's head in right scoring Maddie Snemis to make it 4-3. UMSL had runners the tying and go-ahead runs on base with no one out but were unable to deliver the big hit.

The Hawks extended their lead in the fourth as Gallagher hit a solo home run off the scoreboard in left center to make it 5-3. Rockhurst added two more runs in the fifth on a bloop single from Santoni with the bases loaded and later in the inning Huffman drew a bases loaded walk to make it 7-3.

The Tritons got two of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth on Daley's two-run blast to left for her fifth home run of the season. UMSL was unable to muster anything else as BreAnna Droge retired the final six hitters she faced to preserve the 7-5 victory.

The Tritons outhit the Hawks 13-5 in the contest and were led by Settles with four while Lamos, Scaramuzzi and VanGundy had two hits each. Scaramuzzi took the loss giving up four runs, one earned, on one hit but walked three and struck out two to fall to 2-2 on the season.

UMSL wraps up its six-game homestand on Wednesday hosting Illinois Springfield in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at the UMSL Softball Field.
