ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Missouri S&T 11-8 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at S&T. The Tritons drop to 21-24, 14-13 GLVC while the Miners improve to 22-19, 13-14 GLVC.
Game 1 – S&T 11 UMSL 8
UMSL fell into an early hole in the opening game allowing six runs on five hits and an error in the first frame. Chase Burgess led off the game with a home run to left center. Later in the inning, Cole Hampton drove in two runs with a single to left scoring Dakota Sill and Doug Wood. Sam Monroe drove in Hampton with a single to left to make it 4-0. Michael Hughes singled to right center to drive in Tommy Ruether and Aaron Berkhoff hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Monroe.
The Tritons got on the board in the third.
Kameron Laskowski led off the inning with a single to center, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on
Brandon Olion's fly out to right and scored on
Mitchell Green's sacrifice fly to left.
UMSL drew closer in the fourth scoring three runs on four hits. With two out,
Jake Isaacs and
Braedon Stoakes hit back-to-back singles. Laskowski drove in Isaacs with a single to left and advanced to second on the throw home. Olion made it 6-4 with a two-run single to right scoring Stoakes and Laskowski.
The Miners regained its five-run lead with three in their half of the fourth. Hampton had the big hit in the frame with a two-run homer to right that made it 9-4.
S&T got two more in the sixth on Hampton's second two-run home run of the contest this one to straight away center field.
The Tritons made things interesting in the seventh scoring four runs on four hits. Green led off the inning with a single to center and scored on
Andrew Buescher's two-run home run to center. With two out,
Bryce Kulinski singled to left and scored on Isaacs triple to right center. Isaacs scored the final run on a wild pitch.
UMSL outhit the Miners 13-11 in the opener and were led by Laskowski and Buescher with three hits apiece. Kulinski and Isaacs chipped in with two hits each.
Cody Brooks took the loss allowing nine runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out four in the contest.
Game 2 – S&T 7 UMSL 4
The Tritons trailed 5-0 heading into the sixth inning of the second game.
S&T got an RBI triple from Berkhoff and an RBI single from Burgess in a two-run third inning. The Miners added another in the fourth on a single from Hughes that scored Garrett Weiner. S&T tacked on two in the fifth as Wood drove in Sill with a double to right center and later in the inning Wood scored on a strikeout by Hampton.
UMSL got on the board in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Buescher that scored Isaacs.
The Miners added two insurance runs in their half of the sixth. Berkhoff tripled to right center scoring Hughes and then Berkhoff scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
The Tritons cut S&T's lead in half in the seventh on Olion's three-run homer to center that brought in Stoakes and
Carson Holin.
UMSL had seven hits in the nightcap and were led by Stoakes with two.
Nick Torres took the loss giving up five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Tritons and Miners wrap up their four-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon starting at noon at the Ballpark at S&T.
