ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team split its doubleheader against sixth ranked Indianapolis to clinch a spot in next week's GLVC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the UMSL Softball Field. The Tritons won the second game 3-1 after dropping the opener 3-0.
Game 2 – UMSL 3 UIndy 1
The Greyhounds (46-5, 19-2 GLVC) took an early lead in the nightcap just three batters into the game. Jocelyn Calvin led off with a triple down the right field line. With one out, she scored on Emily O'Connor's groundout to short as she slid in ahead of
Riley Schultz's tag.
UMSL (29-17, 15-7 GLVC) tied the game in the home half of the first as
Irene Travis led off with a home run to right.
Both pitchers settled in as
Annie Scaramuzzi set down 13 Hounds batters during one stretch while Jayden Casebolt retired 10 straight.
The Tritons took the lead in the fourth on back-to-back home runs from
McKenzie Lamos and
Megan Brown. With one out, Lamos smoked the first pitch she saw from Casebolt to straight away center for her eighth home run of the season. Two pitches later, Brown hit a fly ball to left that bounced out of Maddy Stout's glove when she hit the fence and the ball went over the fence for Brown's second roundtripper of the season.
Scaramuzzi worked around a lead off hit by pitch in the sixth by getting a line out to center and back-to-back strikeouts. Scaramuzzi completed her masterpiece setting down the heart of the UIndy lineup in the seventh.
UMSL outhit the Greyhounds 6-1 in the nightcap and were led by Lamos with two while Travis, Brown, Schultz and
Jamie Widule had one hit each. Scaramuzzi picked up the win in the circle allowing the one run on one hit while striking out eight in the complete game victory to improve to 5-3.
Game 1 – UIndy 3 UMSL 0
The first game was a pitcher's duel as well as there was no score through the first five innings.
UIndy had the game's first scoring chance loading the bases with two out in the third but
Jenna Towle got Lexy Rees to ground into a fielder's choice to Lamos at third as she stepped on the bat to end the inning.
The Tritons got a single from Lamos and a double from Travis to start the fourth and would eventually load the bases as Scaramuzzi walked with two out. UMSL appeared to take the lead on a ball hit by
Anna VanGundy but interference was called on Scaramuzzi on the play to end the inning.
The Hounds broke through in the sixth as they loaded the bases with two out. Piper Belden cleared the bases as she hit a sinking fly ball that
Maddie Snemis tried to make a sliding catch, but the ball hit off the heel of Snemis's glove allowing all three runs to score.
The Tritons got a leadoff double from Travis in their half of the sixth but couldn't bring her in.
UMSL had five hits in the opener and was led by Lamos and Travis with two apiece. Towle took the loss in the circle allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Tritons wrap up the regular season on Sunday hosting McKendree in a doubleheader beginning at noon. UMSL will honor its seven seniors prior to the start of the contest.
