ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team split its doubleheader against Truman State on Friday afternoon at the Truman Baseball Park. The Tritons dropped the opener 8-6 but won the nightcap 6-2. UMSL is 15-17, 8-7 GLVC while the Bulldogs are 14-18, 4-11 GLVC.
Game 1 – Truman 8 UMSL 6
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first. With one out,
Jake Isaacs singled to short, went to third on
Brandon Olion's double to right and scored on
Justin Simard's ground out to short.
Truman countered in its half of the first sending 10 batters to the plate scoring five runs on five hits. Dylan Thompson tied the game with a bases loaded single to center. Tyler Tieman followed with a two-run double to right to drive in Luke Turner and Holden Missey. Will Fromm made it 4-1 with a single right center that scored Thompson. Grant Beck drove in the final run of the inning with a single through the left side of the infield.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with a run in the second as Thompson drove in Turner with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Tritons cut the deficit to half with two runs in the third. With one out, Isaacs singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Olion's single through the right side of the infield. Later in the inning, Olion stole second and scored on
Leighton Keller's two-out single to left center.
Truman got one of those runs back in its half of the third. Tal Dean drove in Simon Murray with a two-out single to right center to give the Bulldogs a four-run cushion.
UMSL got a run back in the fourth as
Mitchell Green scored on a single to right from
Braedon Stoakes. The Tritons drew closer in the fifth with two more runs.
Carson Holin drove in Olion with a single up the middle.
Andrew Buescher then brought home Simard with a sacrifice fly to left.
Truman added an insurance run in the sixth with a two-out single from Turner that scored Murray.
UMSL was outhit in the opener 10-9 and was led by Isaacs, Olion and Holin with two hits apiece.
Nick Torres took the loss on the hill giving up five runs on four hits to fall to 3-3.
Game 2 – UMSL 6 Truman 2
The Tritons scored first again with a run in the second inning in the nightcap. Simard led off the inning with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on
Kameron Laskowski's single through the right side of the infield.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Fromm doubled to left center and scored on Beck's single to left.
UMSL retook the lead with a run in the third. With one out, Keller reached on an error by the shortstop, went to third on Olion's single to center and scored on Simard's double to right.
The Tritons extended their lead with two more in the fourth. With two out, Green's at-bat was extended after a dropped foul pop up by the first baseman. Green took advantage hitting a solo home run to left a couple of pitches later. Isaacs singled to left and scored on Stoakes' triple to right.
Truman cut the lead in half in the sixth on a two-out homer to right from Kevin Donohue.
UMSL responded with two more in the seventh. With one out, Stoakes hit a solo home run to right and laster in the inning Olion scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
The Tritons doubled up the Bulldogs in hits in game two 10-5 and were led by Stoakes, Olion and Simard with two each.
Logan Mantz picked up his first win of the season giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
UMSL and Truman conclude their four-game series with a single game at noon on Saturday.
