ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis softball team dropped a hard fought 1-0 contest in eight innings to sixth ranked UIndy in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament on Sunday at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
UMSL (33-20), seeded second, had an opportunity right of the gates to get on the board as
Irene Travis led off the game with a double to left and
Courtney Settles walked. Kenzee Smith got
McKenzie Lamos to ground into a fielder's choice as Travis was forced at third and then Smith got Brown to ground into a 4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Tritons had another chance in the fourth as Brown hit a two-out double down the right field line but was left stranded. UMSL had another chance in the fifth getting a lead-off single from
Maddie Snemis but couldn't move her around.
Annie Scaramuzzi matched Smith zero for zero in the first seven innings before giving up a solo home run down the left field line with one out in the eighth to Maddy Stout.
The Tritons got the tying run on base in the bottom of the frame as
Jamie Widule reached on an infield single to short. Widule was caught stealing trying to get into scoring position for the second out of the inning and
Anna VanGundy struck out swinging to end the contest.
UIndy (50-7), seeded first, outhit UMSL 7-4 in the contest. Travis, Brown, Snemis and Widule had one hit apiece for the Tritons. Scaramuzzi was the tough luck loser giving up the one run on seven hits while striking out four to fall to 8-5 on the season.
