ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team dropped a battle between the top two teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as Indianapolis prevailed 69-64 at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis on Thursday evening.
The Tritons drop to 7-9, 5-3 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 11-5, 7-1 GLVC.
UMSL missed its first four shots to begin the game as it fell into an early eight-point hole but hit 11 of its next 16 attempts including 8-of-10 from long range as part of a 32-15 run to turn the early deficit into a nine-point lead with 2:37 left in the opening stanza.
The Greyhounds held the Tritons scoreless for the rest of the half as they scored the final nine points of the stanza to tie the game at 33 at the break.
The two sides traded baskets to begin the second before UMSL regained the lead on a three-pointer from
Mayson Quartlebaum with 17:14 left in the contest. That three sparked a 15-7 run for the Tritons and gave them a 51-44 lead after a layup by
Troy Glover II with 8:18 to play.
UMSL went cold from the floor for the next six-plus minutes and UIndy took advantage going on an 18-1 run to take its largest lead of the night on a three-pointer from Jesse Bingham with 2:08 remaining.
The Tritons still trailed by 10 with 0:42 left but made things interesting in the final minute scoring eight of the next nine points highlighted by back-to-back three's from Quartlebaum and
Matt Enright to cut the Hound lead to 65-62 with 0:19 left.
UIndy was able to hold UMSL at bay hitting their final four attempts at the foul line to seal the victory.
The Tritons shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the field in the contest including a season-high 12 three-pointers but the difference was at the foul line as UMSL was just 4-of-7 while the Greyhounds were 14-of-23.
Quartlebaum was tied with UIndy's Paul Zilinskas for the game-high in points with 24. Quartlebaum was joined in double figures by Glover II who recorded another double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds while
Emanuel Prospere II added 10 points off the bench.
The Hounds were held to 37 percent (23-for-62) shooting in the game including 9-of-24 from three. They outrebounded the Tritons 44-to-33 including 19-to-8 on the offensive glass and outscored UMSL 17-to-6 in second chance points.
Zilinskas was joined in double figures in scoring by Kendrick Tchoua with 16 points and 15 boards while Bingham chipped in with 10 points.
The Tritons conclude their two-game road trip on Saturday taking on the Lewis Flyers at 3 p.m. in Romeoville, Ill.
