UMSL Women’s Hoops Has Four Players Reach Double Figures Against UIndy

Jalysa Stokes becomes 18th player in school history to join 1,000 point club.

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team had four players reach double figures in scoring in its 72-67 loss to Indianapolis on Thursday evening at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis.

The Tritons fall to 7-9, 5-5 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 9-7, 6-4 GLVC.

UIndy scored the first points of the game on a jumper from Caroline Jakaitis but UMSL countered scoring 12 of the next 14 points to build an eight-point lead. The Tritons hit five of their first eight shots from the field and were led in the early going by Alex Wolff and Amaya Blake who combined to score nine of those points.

The Hounds closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to pull within three at the quarter break.

UMSL scored the first seven points of the second stanza to build its largest lead of the half at 23-13 on a three-pointer from Blake with 7:45 left in the half. UIndy chipped away at the lead thanks to a 7-4 run to pull within seven but the Tritons finished the half strong scoring four of the final seven points to take an eight-point lead into the locker at the intermission.

Wolff led all scorers with 11 points in the frame while Blake added 10 points.

UMSL opened the third quarter scoring 11 of the first 18 points to build its largest lead of the contest at 42-30 on a jumper from Jalysa Stokes with 5:47 left in the stanza. The Greyhounds ran off six straight points to cut the Triton lead in half but a three-point play from Martinez-Stewart and a jumper from Emerson Weller extended the lead back to double digits.

UIndy got a three from Jada Haines to cut the margin back to single digits but Stokes answered with a three on the next possession to push the lead back to 11 and score the 1,000th point of her career. She is the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 points in a career.

The Hounds closed the quarter scoring the final seven points to pull within four heading into the final frame.

The two sides traded baskets over the first two-plus minutes of the second half as UIndy cut UMSL's lead to three. After a three-pointer from Liv Becker tied the game at 54, Stokes gave the Tritons lead right back hitting a jumper. That would be UMSL's last lead of the contest as the Greyhounds used a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to take its first lead since early in the game.

UMSL had a chance to tie the game with 1:25 remaining but Audrey Martinez-Stewart made 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it a one-point game. UIndy regained its two-point lead as Shekinah Thomas made 1-of-2 free throws with 0:32 left.

Stokes missed a jumper that would've tied the game and Morgan Ramthun was fouled going for the loose ball and had a chance to tie the game at the charity stripe but made 1-of-2 to pull the Tritons within one.

UMSL was forced to foul and sent Becker to the line with 0:20 remaining as she made 1-of-2 to make it a two-point game again. Stokes had a chance to give the Tritons the lead but her three-point attempt was off the mark and Patricia Chikamba got the rebound and was fouled. Chikamba hit both free throws to make it a four-point contest.

UMSL had one more chance but Martinez-Stewart missed a three and fouled Elana Wells. Wells hit 1-of-2 at the foul line in the final second to seal the victory for the Hounds.

The Tritons finished the game shooting 47 percent (24-for-51) from the field including 5-of-15 from three and shot 70 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Hounds 32-26 in the contest. Stokes finished with a game-high 18 points while Wolff added 15 points, Martinez-Stewart finished with 13 points and Blake contributed 10 points.

UIndy shot 44 percent (23-for-52) from the floor including 6-of-15 from three and shot 74 percent at the foul line. It turned 18 UMSL turnovers into 25 points. Chikamba led the Greyhounds with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Wells finished with 15 points and Becker added 11 points.

The Tritons wrap up their road trip on Saturday afternoon against Lewis at 1 p.m. in Romeoville, Ill.
