ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start in its 73-50 loss to Maryville on Wednesday afternoon at Moloney Arena. The Tritons drop to 6-7, 4-3 GLVC while the Saints move to 5-7, 2-4 GLVC.
UMSL fell behind by five less than a minute into the contest and was unable to recover as it shot only 30 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes while Maryville connected on 60 percent of their attempts to build a 15-point lead by the end of the frame.
The Tritons fought back in the second quarter pulling to within 11 in the final minute on a layup by
Morgan Ramthun but a layup by Carsyn Fearday on the next possession sent the Saints to the locker room with a 40-27 lead at the break.
UMSL opened the third quarter on an 8-4 run to cut Maryville's lead to 44-35 less than three minutes into the frame. That would be the closest it got as the Saints countered with a 7-0 run to push their lead back to double digits.
The Tritons were able to cut Maryville's lead to 10 by the end of the stanza but the Saints controlled the final 10 minutes outscoring UMSL 18-5 in the frame. Maryville shot 60 percent from the floor in the final frame while holding the Tritons to just 2-of-15 shooting in the quarter.
UMSL shot 37 percent (21-for-57) from the floor in the contest including 3-of-11 from three but only shot 50 percent at the foul line.
Jalysa Stokes led the Tritons with 13 points while
Amaya Blake added 12 points and
Audrey Martinez-Stewart finished with 10 points. UMSL was outrebounded in the contest 35-to-29 and turned the ball over 13 times.
The Saints finished the game connecting on 56 percent (31-for-55) of their attempts from the floor including 5-of-14 from three and shot 50 percent at the charity stripe. Karlee Feldman led four Maryville players in double figures with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Antoinette Mussorici added 16 points, Faith Hawthorne finished with 15 points off the bench and Gracie Stugart chipped in with 10 points.
The Tritons are back at home on Saturday hosting Truman State at 1 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
