HAMMOND, Ind. – The 11th ranked University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team extended its winning streak to six with a pair of sweeps at the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Ind. The Tritons defeated Wayne State (Mich.) in their first match and Ashland in their second contest of the day.
Addison Voorhees led a balanced UMSL (15-2) attack with 25 kills across the two matches while hitting .291.
Alayna Santel added 18 kills on the day while
Brooklyn Young and
Iyannah Jackson finished with 10 kills apiece.
Caitlin Bishop directed an offense that averaged 12.2 kills per set and dished out a total of 74 assists in the two matches.
Trysta Foster added seven aces,
Hannah Copeland finished with five blocks while Bishop and
Skylar Weaver had 18 digs each.
Match 1 – UMSL 3 Wayne State 0
The Tritons hit nearly .400 in the opening stanza as it pulled away late in the set for a 25-16 victory to begin the day. Voorhees recorded five of her team-high 12 kills in the stanza while Santel and
Maggie Johnson added four kills apiece.
The middle frame was a defensive battle as UMSL hit just .120 but held the Warriors (7-9) to a .000 attack percentage. Voorhees had three kills in the stanza.
The Tritons never trailed in the final frame though Wayne State made a late run pulling to within 24-22 after a kill from Kayla Giroux but UMSL got a kill from Johnson to end the contest.
The Tritons hit .256 for the match while holding the Warriors to a .175 attack percentage.
Match 2 – UMSL 3 Ashland 0
The opening set of the afternoon session was back-and-forth with 14 ties and six lead changes. The Eagles (12-5) led 24-23 and had a chance to serve out the set but UMSL scored the final three points to take the opener 26-24. Voorhees had two kills in the set deciding run while Copeland added the third.
Both offenses were humming in the middle stanza as the Tritons hit .395 while Ashland hit .250 but UMSL recorded 20 kills led by the duo of Young and Voorhees who had 13 of them to win the set 25-18.
The Tritons led 18-14 in the final frame but an 8-4 Eagle run allowed them to come back and even the stanza at 22 after an error by Voorhees. Ashland had a chance to take the lead but a service error put UMSL back in front 23-22. Voorhees finished the match with back-to-back kills and had a match-high 13 kills in the contest.
The Tritons hit .276 in the afternoon match and held the Eagles to a .225 attack percentage.
UMSL concludes play in the Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon taking on No. 15 Grand Valley at 2 p.m. at the Hammond Sportsplex.
