ST. LOUIS – The No. 19 University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team swept Truman State to snap its three-game losing streak on Friday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 16-5, 5-3 GLVC while the Bulldogs drop to 5-18, 2-6 GLVC.
The opening stanza went back-and-forth with four ties and three lead changes. UMSL led by four early but Truman hung around rallying to tie the set at 15 after an error from
Addison Voorhees. The Tritons ran off five straight points to force a timeout by the Bulldogs. After the timeout, Truman countered with three in a row of its own to pull within 20-18. The Tritons extended their lead back to three at 23-20 after a service error by Michaela Goad.
The Bulldogs wouldn't go quietly getting back-to-back points to pull back within one at 23-22 and force UMSL to take a timeout. The Tritons closed the set strong getting a kill from
Iyannah Jackson and an attack error from Jessica Proszenyak to win the opener 25-22.
UMSL trailed 10-4 in the middle frame but rallied thanks to a 6-1 run to pull within 11-10 after an error from Makayla Way. Truman stretched its lead back to three but the Tritons finished the set strong scoring 12 of the final 16 points to win the set 25-20 to take the commanding 2-0 lead.
UMSL dominated the final stanza hitting .298 with 20 kills against six errors while holding the Bulldogs to a .026 hitting percentage. The Tritons led by as many as 10 in the frame and took the finale 25-15. Jackson,
Alayna Santel and
Hannah Copeland had 15 of the team's kills in the stanza while Copeland added four blocks.
UMSL finished the match hitting .277 with 49 kills against 16 errors in 119 attempts. Voorhees led the Tritons with 12 kills and she was joined in double figures by Jackson with 11 and Copeland added 10.
Caitlin Bishop handed out 43 assists,
Rylee Edson had 15 digs and Copeland finished with six blocks.
The Bulldogs hit .112 for the match with 28 kills against 16 errors in 107 chances and were led by Autumn Erickson with nine kills. Emma Baierl had 14 assists, Addy Janssen added 14 digs and Way had two blocks.
UMSL is back at home on Saturday (Nov. 2) hosting Upper Iowa at 3 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
