LEBANON, Ill. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer 2024 season ended in a hard fought 1-0 loss at No. 12 McKendree on Sunday evening at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Ill.
The Tritons, seeded sixth, had the game's best scoring chances in the first half.
Gibson Hunt had a chance in the 31st minute that narrowly sailed over the bar and
JT Goldstein had a header attempt miss high two minutes before halftime.
UMSL outshot the Bearcats (12-0-6), seeded third, 4-2 in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Tritons had two chances early in the second half to get on the board but were denied by Christian Herluf. Herluf denied a chance by
Roman Ryabchenko at the start of the half and then saved an attempt by
Drew Schenk in the 58th minute.
Austin Reis made two great saves 70 seconds apart to keep the game scoreless.
McKendree broke through in the 68th minute as Reis came off his line but couldn't get the loose ball and it fell to Matteo Schubert who shot it into the open goal for his second of the season.
The Tritons had one more chance in the final 10 minutes but Goldstein was denied by Herluf.
UMSL finished the game with an 11-8 advantage in shots but each team had three on goal. The Bearcats had four corner kicks to two for the Tritons.
UMSL finished its season with a record of 7-5-6 including 5-3-6 in the GLVC and made its first postseason appearance since 2021.
