Women’s Basketball Rolls Past UHSP

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated USHP 76-35 on Friday evening at the UHSP Gymnasium in St. Louis. The win improves the Tritons to 2-1 on the season while the Eutectics are 0-4.

UMSL scored 17 points in the first quarter, led by Alex Wolff who scored eight.

UHSP scored first on a layup after a defensive rebound a minute into the quarter. Wolff answered ten seconds later with a jump shot of her own assisted by Kate Rolfes

The Tritons and the Eutectics then traded turnovers, keeping the score locked at two points each before Rolfes scored a three thanks to rebounding efforts by Morgan Ramthun and Wolff that kept Triton possession of the ball.

UMSL went on a 13-0 to extend its lead over UHSP.

Audrey Martinez-Stewart started the second quarter off with a steal but neither team got on the scoreboard until two minutes in when Ramthun scored both of her free-throws.

The Eutectics kept themselves in the game by scoring a three-point shot. However, the Tritons immediately answered with a Rolfes layup and then a steal by Rolfes prevent UHSP from answering.

Ramthun led UMSL with 10 rebounds with six coming in the second quarter. She had four offensive boards and two defensive boards to keep the Tritons in possession of the ball. As UMSL's shooting went cold, Ramthun's rebounds prevented UHSP from going on a run.

The Tritons went half-time with a 14-point lead over UHSP and shooting 39.4 percent from the floor compared to 19.4 percent for UHSP.

Katie Hamill scored for UMSL to start the third quarter off with an early layup. Hamill then scored another layup after rebounding a missed Wolff shot that was the product of a Martinez-Stewart steal.

After the Eutectics scored a layup, the Tritons scored 12 unanswered points with buckets from four different players on the court.

UHSP hit a three-point shot to snap the streak, but UMSL answered with another 10-point run to finish the third quarter.

Rolfes started the final quarter off with a three-point shot to extend the Tritons lead to 38 points, assisted by Ramthun. The play started on the other end with an Abby Peterson defensive rebound.

The Eutectics managed to put together a six-point run before the Tritons stopped them with a Wolff free-throw. However, UHSP managed to score another three-point shot with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Emerson Weller sunk her two free throws to send the Tritons on a five-point run that involved an Addison Hefel three-point shot, her first in her collegiate career.

Brooke Woodyard ended the quarter hitting both her free-throws before Hamill made a defensive rebound to end the game.

The Tritons shot 44.9 percent from the field. Wolff led UMSL with 17 points, four assists, and four rebounds. Ramthun had four points with 15 rebounds and five assists.

Sara Hameed led UHSP with seven points, one rebound, and one assist. The Eutectics shot 22 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from the three-point line.

The Tritons return to Mark Twain next Friday (Nov. 22) hosting Kentucky Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
