ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team claimed its first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference championship with a 1-0 win over third seeded McKendree on Saturday afternoon at Creve Coeur Soccer Park. The win secures the GLVC's automatic bid into the national tournament for the Tritons and improves their record to 14-3-3. UMSL is the first five seed to win the GLVC Women's Soccer Tournament.
It was an
Adelaide Green goal in the 81st minute that put UMSL up 1-0. Green found herself in plenty of space just outside the Bearcats (16-4-1) 18-yard box. She lined up her shot and sent the ball flying into the top of the net, past the outstretched glove of Maicy Mueller.
The Tritons goal came after they had generated offense for most of the second half. Coming out in the second, UMSL generated 13 shots, forcing three saves from McKendree and keeping the ball firmly in the Bearcats defensive third.
The first half was more balanced with both goalkeepers being called upon to make nearly identical saves.
Three minutes into the game,
Mary Kate Neal punched the ball over the bar on a curling McKendree shot. The Tritons scrambled during the ensuing corner kick but managed to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
In the 17th minute,
Josie Maddox sent a high, curling shot towards the goal, forcing a diving save from McKendree keeper Mueller.
UMSL outshot the Bearcats 18-9, with six of the Tritons' shots being on frame compared to only two for McKendree.
The shutout is Neal's 10th of the season moving her into a tie for third place in a single season. She now is tied with Courtney Carmody and Rebecca Senn.
The Tritons will find out their NCAA tournament opponent and location in the Selection Show on Monday night, airing at 6 p.m. (CST) on NCAA.com.
UMSL's Neal,
Emily Bloomfield,
Jaycee Cotton and
Kayley Judy were named to the GLVC All-Tournament team.
