ST. LOUIS – The No. 22 University of Missouri-St. Louis women's volleyball team celebrated its senior day with a sweep of Drury on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 19-7, 8-5 GLVC while the Panthers finish their season with a record of 14-13 including 4-9 in the GLVC.
UMSL led by as many as five early in the opening set but a lengthy run by Drury saw the Tritons trailing 17-11 after a kill from Mailie Chretien. UMSL got a kill from
Hannah Copeland to quiet the run but the Panthers ran off three more to seize a 20-13 lead. The Tritons still trailed 24-16 before running off eight straight points to tie the set at 24 on a kill from
Alayna Santel.
Drury had two more chances to win the set but couldn't close it out as UMSL scored the final three points of the stanza to win 28-26 on a kill from Santel.
The Tritons fell behind by five early in the middle frame before cutting it 13-11 but the Panthers ran off six straight points to grab a 19-11 lead after a service for Chretien. UMSL still trailed 20-13 after a kill by Kayli Duncan before going on a 6-0 run to pull within 20-19 on a kill from
Brooklyn Young.
Drury extended its lead to 22-20 but the Tritons scored the final five points of the set to win it 25-22 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final frame of the match saw eight ties and three lead changes. The two sides went back and forth and were tied at nine after a block error on Copeland. UMSL got back-to-back points to take an 11-9 advantage but the Panthers wouldn't got quietly scoring six of the next 10 points to even things at 15 on a block by Kennedy Outler and Kaitlin Fasbender.
The Tritons retook the lead with four straight points highlighted by two kills from
Iyannah Jackson to seize control of the set. Drury got as close as 22-19 before UMSL sealed it with three straight points to complete the sweep.
The Tritons hit .182 for the match with 48 kills against 18 errors in 165 attempts and were led by Santel with 10 kills while Young and Jackson had nine kills apiece.
Caitlin Bishop had 43 assists,
Skylar Weaver had 32 digs and Santel added three blocks.
The Panthers were held to .097 attack percentage with 37 kills against 23 errors in 145 attempts and were led by Duncan with a match-high 16 kills. Grace Gardner handed out 30 assists and Chretien finished with 22 digs.
UMSL returns to the court next Friday for the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament at Williamsville Field House in Williamsville, Ill. Opponent and match time will be announced on Sunday.
