ST. LOUIS – The No. 18 University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team dropped a top 20 contest at No. 20 Quincy 3-1 on Friday evening at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. The Tritons are now 17-6, 6-4 GLVC while the Hawks improve to 22-3, 9-1 GLVC.
UMSL trailed by as many as eight in the opening stanza before a late rally pulled it to within 24-23 after a kill from
Maggie Johnson but unfortunately the Tritons were unable to complete the comeback as Quincy took the opener 25-23.
UMSL again had to overcome an early deficit in the middle frame falling behind 3-0. The Tritons came all the way back to even the set at 15 after a kill from
Addison Voorhees. UMSL was unable to take the lead as the Hawks ran off four straight and 10 of the last 15 points to win the stanza 25-20 and take the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Tritons dominated the third set hitting .385 while holding Quincy to just .069 attack percentage. UMSL led for most of the set and by as many as nine after
Hannah Copeland blocked Erin Matzke to give the Tritons the third set win to extend the match.
The fourth set was all Hawks as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led by as many as 11 on their way to a 25-15 victory. Quincy hit .405 in the frame with 16 kills against one error in 37 attempts and held the Tritons to a .107 attack percentage.
UMSL finished the match hitting .274 with 53 kills against 19 errors in 124 attempts and was led by
Alayna Santel with 14 kills while Copeland added 13 and Johnson finished with nine.
Caitlin Bishop handed out 43 assists, Copeland had four blocks and
Skylar Weaver finished with 16 digs.
The Hawks hit .326 for the contest with 56 kills against 13 errors in 132 chances. Emma Wjinbergen had a match-high 18 kills while Susanna Beretti added 16 and Luna Van Baars had 10 kills. Elena Kasavica had 50 assists and Janelle Pye-Blacknard finished with 14 digs.
The Tritons play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday travling to Springfield, Ill., to take on Illinois Springfield at 3 p.m.
