Women’s Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Knock Off Saints

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated Maryville 75-53 on Monday evening at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 6-1, 2-0 GLVC while the Saints fall to 1-6, 0-2 GLVC.

UMSL shot 67 percent (16-for-24) from the floor in the second half including 3-of-5 from downtown and was 11-for-19 at the charity stripe. The Tritons had seven different players score in the contest with four reaching double figures.

It was a slow first quarter for UMSL. Morgan Ramthun scored the first three points for the Tritons with a made free throw and then a layup a minute later but Maryville answered with a five-point run before UMSL countered with a five-point run of their own, kicked off by a Kate Rolfes three.

A three-point shot by Ramthun and a layup by Alex Wolff kept the score close, but the Saints ended the first quarter with back-to-back buckets from Alicia Burgos and Olivia Hahn to take a three-point advantage into the second frame.

The second quarter saw similar shooting woes for the Tritons. Katie Hamill started the scoring for UMSL with a layup to cut the score to one. Wolff added a layup and converted her plus-one free throw before Rolfes scored a layup to give the Tritons a four-point lead.

A series of turnovers stalled the Tritons offense, allowing Maryville to stay in the game with a timely three-pointer. A ten-point run followed for the Saints, who had a six-point lead with just over two minutes to go in the half.

Ramthun scored a layup off a Wolff assist to cut the lead to four but the two teams traded buckets to keep Maryville in the lead by three at the intermission.

The third quarter is where UMSL found its groove as it shot 60 percent (9-for-15) from the floor including 1-of-3 from three. Wolff scored the first points of the quarter igniting a 16-2 run turning the three-point halftime deficit into an 11-point lead.

Hamill and Wolff had five points apiece in that run while Mara Rieder added four points

The Tritons ended the third quarter on a six-point run with half those points coming from made free-throws to take a 13-point lead into the final stanza.

With Maryville in foul trouble, the Tritons opened the fourth quarter going four for four from the free-throw line, enjoying a 15-point lead.

Abby Peterson scored the final shot of the game, a three-pointer with a 1:39 to go that gave UMSL a 22-point lead for its largest of the game. The Tritons defense did the rest, preventing the Saints from having easy looks for their last two basket attempts. Reider and Anna Costa Riera secured defensive rebounds to prevent Maryville from having multiple looks per possession.

Wolff led the Tritons with 21 points, four rebounds, and one block on the night. Hamill was second with 17 points, seven rebounds. Ramthun had 14 rebounds on the night, as well as 12 points and Rolfes finished with 11 points.

UMSL shot 50 percent (26-for-52) from the field including 6-of-14 from the three-point arc, 71 percent from the free-throw and secured 11 points off Maryville turnovers.

The Saints shot 32.3 percent (21-for-65) from the field, were 4-of-24 from the three-point arc and shot 58 percent from the free-throw line. Maryville's leading scorer was Adylan Ayer with 22 points and three rebounds. The next closest was Gracie Stugart with eight points and nine rebounds.

The Tritons continue their season-long three-game homestand on Thursday (Dec. 5) hosting the University of Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m. at the Mark Twain Building.
