Martinez-Stewart Records Double-Double but UMSL Women’s Hoops Falls to Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – Audrey Martinez-Stewart recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball came up short in a 62-56 loss at Upper Iowa on Thursday evening at Dorman Memorial Gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa.

The Tritons drop to 8-12, 6-8 GLVC while the Peacocks improve 9-8, 6-7 GLVC.

The lead changed hands twice in the first 5:30 minutes of the game. UMSL trailed by three before getting back-to-back jumpers from Mara Rieder and Amaya Blake to take its last lead of the game at 10-9.

Upper Iowa closed the quarter scoring seven of the final nine points behind five points from Katie Tornstrom and two more from Mia Huberty to take a four-point lead into the second frame.

The Peacocks led by as many as nine points in the second quarter but the Tritons kept battling pulling to within six at halftime as Martinez-Stewart scored their final three points of the half.

UMSL kept chipping away at the lead in the third quarter pulling to within 38-35 after a layup from Emerson Weller just past the halfway point of the stanza but couldn't draw closer as UIU scored seven of the final 10 points of the frame to take a seven-point advantage into the final 10 minutes.

The Triton defense held the Peacocks to only two field goals in the final frame but both of those were three-pointers. UMSL drew within 52-50 with 2:01 remaining after a layup from Rieder but Huberty answered on the other end hitting a three from the left wing with the shot clock winding down to put UIU in front by five.

The Tritons wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Peacocks went 7-for-8 at the foul line in the final 0:30 to seal the victory.

UMSL was held to 36 percent shooting (23-for-64) in the contest, was 0-of-13 from three and shot 71 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded Upper Iowa 48-to-29 and had an 11-1 advantage in second chance points. Martinez-Stewart was joined in double figures by Rieder who matched her career-high with 18 points and Blake who added 12 points.

The Peacocks shot less than 40 percent (21-for-53) from the field but the difference was they were 7-of-17 from beyond the arc and shot 72 percent at the foul line. Tornstrom led all scorers with 21 points and was joined in double figures by Huberty with 15 while Brooke Evenson finished with 11 points.

UMSL concludes its two-game road trip on Saturday traveling to Kirksville, Mo., to take on Truman State at 1 p.m. at Pershing Arena.
