UMSL Women’s Hoops Defeats Quincy for Third Straight Win

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated Quincy 68-60 for its third straight win on Saturday afternoon at the Mark Twain Building. The Tritons improve to 11-12, 9-8 GLVC while the Hawks fall to 9-14, 8-9 GLVC.

UMSL got a three-point play on its first possession of the game from Alex Wolff to take the early lead but Quincy rattled off 11 of the next 12 points to take its largest lead of the game at the 6:27 mark of the opening frame on a three-point play from Cymirah Williams.

The Tritons finished the quarter strong with 10 of the final 14 points to tie it at 15 after Wolff's second three-point play of the stanza. Emerson Weller missed the second free throw of a two-shot foul and Tori Standefer got the rebound. Standefer missed her layup but Wolff got the put back and was fouled.

The two sides traded baskets to start the second quarter with the Hawks leading 18-17 after a three from Taya Stevenson. That would be Quincy's last lead as UMSL ran off nine of the next 10 points to build a 26-19 after a jumper from Wolff with 5:39 left in the half. Wolff had four points in the run while Standefer added a three and Morgan Ramthun chipped in with two.

The Hawks pulled to within five after a pair of free throws from Acheampomaa Danso but the Tritons scored 11 of the next 15 points to take its largest lead of the half at 37-25 with 1:05 to go before halftime on a jumper from Weller.

Quincy cut the lead to nine at the break on a three-pointer from Mikayla Huffine.

UMSL shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the second quarter while holding the Hawks to 30 percent shooting in the stanza.

The Tritons scored the first six points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 15 after a layup from Ramthun. Quincy cut the lead to four courtesy of an 11-0 run over the next four minutes.

Audrey Martinez-Stewart silenced the run with a three that sparked a 9-3 run over the final two minutes of the frame to take a 10-point lead into the final stanza.

UMSL carried that momentum into the final quarter outscoring the Hawks 12-4 over the first 6:32 to take its largest lead of the game at 64-46 on a jumper from Amaya Blake.

Quincy wouldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Tritons shut the door to sweep the regular season series.

UMSL finished the game shooting 49 percent (26-for-53) from the floor but were 2-of-7 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Hawks 36-to-25, had a 42-to-28 advantage in points in the point and outscored Quincy 11-9 in points off turnovers.

Wolff led four Tritons in double figures with 18 points while Martinez-Stewart had double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Blake and Mara Rieder added 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Hawks were held to 39 percent shooting in the contest including 4-of-11 from three and shot 82 percent at the foul line. Danso finished with a game-high 20 points.

UMSL begins its final road trip of the season next Thursday at Drury beginning at 5:45 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo.
