ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team used a 21-4 run late in the first to take control in its 70-55 win over Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar, Mo.
The Tritons improve to 11-14, 9-8 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 6-18, 2-14 GLVC.
UMSL never trailed in the contest as it scored the first five points of the game and jumped out to an early nine-point lead after a dunk from
Troy Glover II at the 13:30 mark of the opening half.
SBU countered scoring 11 of the next 14 points in a span of four minutes to pull within one after a free throw from David Hector.
Matt Enright and Drenin Dinkins traded three's as the Tritons still led by one with 8:30 remaining in the stanza.
That's when UMSL made its run. Glover started it with a jumper as the Tritons scored seven straight points to extend its lead to 26-18 after two free throws from
Savon Wykle. The Bearcats were within six when UMSL ran off 12 straight points to take its largest lead of the half at 40-22 on a three from Wykle.
SBU cut the deficit to 13 thanks to five straight points from Sasha Glushkov but the Tritons got three free throws from Enright at the end of the half to take a 16-point lead at the half.
UMSL opened the second half on a 14-7 run to build its largest lead of the contest at 57-34 on a three-pointer from
Georden Rogers early in the second half.
The Bearcats cut the Triton lead to 15 courtesy of a 10-4 over the next six minutes but wouldn't get any closer as UMSL pushed its lead back to 20 and cruised over the final seven minutes to pick up the victory.
The Tritons finished the contest shooting 43 percent (23-for-53) from the floor in the contest including 11-of-28 from three and shot 81 percent at the foul line. UMSL forced 14 turnovers in the contest and outscored SBU 18-4 in points off turnovers. Enright led three Tritons in double figures with 19 points while Glover added 18 points and seven rebounds. Rogers added a season-high 13 points off the bench.
The Bearcats shot 42 percent (21-for-50) from the field in the game and was held to 4-of-16 from beyond the arc but shot 90 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded UMSL 35-to-24. Dinkins finished with a game-high 23 points while Glushkov finished with 16 points.
The Tritons play their final road game of the regular season next Saturday traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree at 3 p.m.
