Rieder’s Career Day Leads UMSL Women’s Hoops Past Southwest Baptist

ST. LOUIS – Mara Rieder scored a career-high 34 points in the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team's 77-70 win at Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

The Tritons improve to 12-13, 10-9 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 9-15, 5-13 GLVC.

UMSL's post players dominated the opening quarter as the trio of Rieder, Alex Wolff and Morgan Ramthun combined to score all 22 of the team's points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor in the frame as it led by 14 heading into the second quarter.

The Tritons stretched their lead to 15 points early in the second stanza on a layup by Rieder 1:19 into the frame. UMSL led by 13 near the midway point of the quarter but SBU used a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to pull within seven after a jumper by Kristin Edmonds.

The two sides traded the final eight points of the half as the Tritons went to the locker room with a 36-27 at the break.

The Bearcats opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the margin to four on a three-pointer from Karlee Holland. UMSL stretched its lead back to eight but couldn't shake SBU as they hung around getting to within one at 53-52 on layup from Tori Hamilton with 2:17 left in the stanza.

The Tritons countered scoring six of the next eight points on an old fashioned three-point play from Wolff and a three-pointer from Jalysa Stokes to extend its lead to five with 0:31 left in the stanza.

The Bearcats got a jumper from Hamilton in the closing seconds to pull to within three heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

SBU tied the game at 61 early in the final frame on a layup from Hamilton but UMSL never relinquished the lead going on a 10-0 run over the next 4:46 to extend its lead back to double digits. Rieder had eight points in the game deciding run while Amaya Blake added the other two.

The Bearcats got a hook shot from Hamilton and a transition three from Holland to pull within five with 2:39 remaining but the Tritons sealed the game at the foul line hitting six of eight free throws in the final 0:40 to pick up the victory.

Rieder also recorded career-highs in field goals made (12) and free throws made (10) while grabbing eight rebounds and three blocks. Rieder, Wolff and Ramthun combined to score 54 points on 19-of-33 shooting from the floor and 16-for-17 at the foul line.

Rieder, Wolff and Ramthun were joined in double figures by Blake with 10 points. Ramthun pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season.

UMSL ended the game shooting 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the field including 2-of-6 from three and 74 percent at the foul line. The Tritons outrebounded SBU 39-to-30 in the contest, had a 20-9 advantage in second chance points and outscored the Bearcats 50-40 in the paint.
